Project PoinDesk - Desks for Kids

Donation protected

I started this adventure of providing desks for kids in my area in late summer of 2020 to gear up for kids distance learning during the pandemic. I wanted to provide a space for kids to do their work, other than the couch or kitchen table. A place of their own to focus on the tasks at hand.  Things escalated pretty quickly when I shared a post on Facebook and before I knew it, I had built 120 desks for kids in my immediate community of Salem/Keizer.

Recently MakerForce  reached out to me to partner up and allow me to tap into their network of talented people to hopefully take this venture to the next level by crowdsourcing the manufacturing and distribution of the desks to kids all over the Oregon metro area. Doing all the work as one person has been rewarding, but also tiring. I have received some help from a couple of people on occasion, and for that I am very grateful. But in order for this to grow and get these into the hands of so many that need them, I need help. Materials are not free and although donations have done a good job of keeping pace to offset my costs, it is time to do a round of real fundraising, so I have opted to start this Go-Fund Me.

The goal of this fundraiser is to raise funds to pay for all the parts that go into making a desk. Below is a breakdown of what a desk costs

Plywood: $52-60/Sheet - 2 desks (Price fluctuates based on availability and market)
Screws (39 per desk):  $1.20 (Yes I did the math.)
Glue: $.05 (No I didnt do the math on this one.)
The rough cost per desk is ~$30.

Setting the initial goal at $5000 to hopefully build another 165 desks for kids in the Salem/Portland metro areas.

If you have shop space and would like to build some for the cause, please reach out to me directly either at Poindesk.com, Facebook, or Instagram(@maxpoin) so we can discuss further.

If you want to build one of these desks yourself for your child or another kid in need, please see the  Rockler Desk Challenge for the plans to my desk and many others.

If you live in the Salem/Keizer/Portland area and need a desk, you can request one at PoinDesk.com. I will be in touch with you to communicate lead times.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read this page and thank you for considering a donation that will be used for a very good cause.
