Aweil is the capital of the Northern Bhar El Ghazal region; one out of three states in South Sudan. During the civil war, the capital, Aweil, was terrorized by a guerrilla-like army. Mass displacement and child abduction were particularly frequent in the Northern Bhar El Ghazal, since it was a state situated at the border it was hit hardest by the war. Consequently, most of the population which was at the receiving end of this civil war were woman and children.
There are about 350 orphans who live rough on the streets of Aweil, the capital of Northern Bhar el Ghazal state in South Sudan. The war is the main reason children have lost their parents, but the number of orphans also rose rapidly due to the products of war such as famine and endemic diseases which add to an already complicated situation.
The children live day to day and beg for leftover food from restaurants. Older children are sometimes exploited by restaurant owners to clean their utensils in exchange for remnants of food under the cooking pots. It is unsightly to see the children scrambling over the pots to pick up those pieces of food which are just enough to live beyond that day.
Some children are abused at night at shop corners or under the bridge where they sleep. These children don’t have plans for tomorrow, next week or next year. Their lives are dependent on the mercy of those who can afford to give them a meal for the day.
When Rosa fled Aweil as a refugee, and found herself safe and living in Brisbane, she decided she wanted to help the people still suffering in South Sudan. Rosa formed a small group that soon started to support people directly in Aweil, by providing practical support to those still suffering the effects of war, absolute poverty and disease.
One of the main things they have been doing is to link children orphaned by war to families in Brisbane who support them by providing food, medicine and sustainable resources such as seeds for growing food, directly to the families. The next aim is to send some of the foster children to school.
Your contribution can buy seeds, food, clothes, school uniforms or employ a matron to look after the children at night. Donations go directly to the families supporting the foster children and no money is spent on administration; it is only volunteers fundraising in Brisbane and Aweil.
