Project Erebus – We Need Crew!

We are recruiting crew for the Antarctic Circumpolar Adventure! Come and join us in recreating the greatest polar expedition ever undertaken by ship. We will set sail for two years on this epic 20,000 km expedition using the smallest ships to ever sail in the Southern oceans. The funds we are raising are to cover the tailor made tracking equipment, sensors and camera units, project costs including; learning materials, building resources, equipment consumables/tools, estimated satellite time and the shipping costs to the Falkland Islands. Any funds raised beyond what is required for this educational adventure will be donated at the end of the project to support the works of the Franklin Interim Advisory Committee (FIAC), who work closely with both Parks Canada and the local Inuit community to protect and conserve the two wreck sites.

To help us cover the costs of the build, tracking and logistics we have come up with a fun way to raise the funds needed. Everyone is invited to donate to the cause based on the actual annual salary of the crew in 1840. A salary donation will secure you a position on the crew on either Erebus or Terror. For “officer” donations you will be assigned an actual named officer and a small wooden figure will be attached with your name onto the boats. Or you can simply make a donation to the adventure to help with the boat costs with any excess going directly to the FIAC.

There were 66 crew on HMS Erebus (under Captain James Clark Ross – Ollie), and ) and 62 on HMS Terror ( under Commander Francis Crozier – Harry).  Each ship needs a compliment of roughly:

10 X Officer (£113.66)* £115 ($160)

3 X Warrant Officer (£32.95)* £35 ($50)

21 X Petty Officer (£22.77)* £25 ($35)

20 X Able Seaman (£20.38)* £20 ($30)

6 X Marines (£17.08)* £15 ($20)

2 X Cabin Boy (£7.96)* £8 ($10)

*Average annual Salary in 1840

The funds are to cover current estimated costs of £5,960, based on the following predicted outlay:

2 X SPOT-293 marine Trackers
- £2,450

Line rental & satellite credit for predicted 24 months sailing - £2,640 (660 per ship per year).

Shipping and handling to the Falklands - £400

Materials, tools and equipment.£500

Note: All costs are based on current predicted estimates and project requirements. These may be subject to change as the project progresses.

Come join us on this epic adventure as we circumnavigate the globe on the finest polar expeditions ships ever built, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.
