Project Amazonas: Connecting Worlds

Dear Friends,
We are excited to announce a unique international service project that partners students from the Honors College at Florida Gulf Coast University with Project Amazonas. Project Amazonas is a non-political, non-sectarian NGO working since 1994 to serve the people of the Amazon and conserve the rainforest. FGCU student are raising funds to build a Satellite Internet System for a rural clinic in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon.
This meaningful service project will take place during an FGCU study abroad class to Peru this summer. As we began working with Project Amazonas, we asked the basic question that should start any service project, "What is the most impactful thing we can do while in Peru? What do you need?" They explained their mission and told us how a Satellite Internet System would drastically improve their ability to communicate with and serve rural Amazonian communities.
Communication is a vital part of an emerging country's development. This Satellite Internet System will be primarily used at a support clinic that offers health care to local communities. This will allow them to order medications, arrange patient transfers, and improve the overall quality of medical care. However, these are not the only uses. Researchers will be able to utilize the system, along with students that need to make phone calls home to parents. It will support trade, empowering economic development. It will give local students the opportunity to take English or other online classes. Additionally, it will serve as a warning system for natural disasters or other situations that emerge.
We would appreciate any support in our efforts as we trying to improve global equality and improve the lives of those in rural areas who need it.
