Dear all!
My name is Helen and I am a pre-master student of Arts, Culture and Society at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. I have started a crowdfunding campaign to pursue my dream of completing my higher education and later contributing to society with my never ending creativity and enthusiasm. Please allow me the opportunity to explain why I am doing this.
Because I come from the Ukraine, which is not part of the EU, I face greater challenges than the typical Dutch / European student.
First, as a non-EU citizen, I have to pay 11.000 euros per year instead of the 1.900 euros that is required of the Dutch / EU students.
Second, again because of my citizenship, I cannot apply for a study loan DUO.
Third, unlike the Dutch students, I do not receive the free transportation benefit in the Netherlands.
Pre-master was already a significant effort, but it was still a feasible one. I initially was pursuing an engineering degree, but gradually over time I developed the desire to pursue higher education in the fine arts. My passion for fine art and culture emerged with a new energy after arriving in Amsterdam. The abundance of works from the old masters contrasted with the contemporary art exhibited here soon inspired me to begin painting myself. As a result, I have now conducted two solo exhibitions in the past year, as well as run painting workshops, organized flash mobs, and volunteered at art festivals. All of these activities further convinced me to change my life path, because the more I dwelled within the art circles, the more I realized that this was my life occupation.
Once I realized this, I constructed a plan to make my dream come true. In order to finance the pre-master, which costs 5.900 euros, I took all kinds of jobs while being an au pair in Denmark. I cleaned houses, I walked dogs, I did graphic design, I served as a nanny, and so on. Some of the money I needed was obtained by selling paintings, commission art and other creative activities.
To cover living expenses, I found work as a helper and nanny to a Dutch family living in Amstelveen. And, to get to classes in Rotterdam, it takes me 2 to 2,5 hours by train and bicycle. But overcoming all of these obstacles proves that I love what I study. The more I sacrifice, the more I appreciate what I'm pursuing.
Prior to pursuing this crowdfunding avenue, I have tried all possible ways to finance my Master degree. I applied to three different universities that provide full scholarships and other types of funding. Unfortunately, I had no luck with that. Moreover, it was not possible to save any money during the current year as I had no time for any side jobs or painting while studying. My only parent, my mother, unfortunately cannot finance my
studies as her own salary is only 130 euros per month, which is only sufficient to make her own ends meet. Despite this, together we tried to take out loans with three different banks in the Ukraine, but they all refused our attempts.
I need your help to raise 11.000 euros by the 20 th of August to pay my tuition fees for the Master year.
I know this must sound like a lot to you when you look at the total amount that I need to raise, but I’m not asking for any of you to contribute a significantly large amount. I would much prefer it if I could receive only 50 euros each from 220 of you, or only 25 euros each from 440 of you, by August 20th. Or, if I could receive only 50 euros each from 100 of you, or only 25 euros each from 200 of you, by the end of June, that would also be fantastic and I would be so grateful.
To further encourage you as potential donors, I will organize a lottery on the 21 st of August. Five randomly determined donors will get the opportunity to have coffee and cake in the center of Amsterdam with me; 5 others will receive personalised t-shirts with PROHELEN prints on them, and finally, 3 of the donors will receive original paintings from me.
This crowdfunding project is crucial step for my educational goals. I have only 2 months left to find the 11.000 euros to pay my tuition fees for the next year. I do need your help and I hope to be the beneficiary of your kindness and philanthropy. I am a philantrope myself; contributing my time, enthusiasm and skills to society by means of volunteering, and I do believe that the goodwill that we project into the world comes back to us as well.
