Primate C.A.R.E. Baboon Release Collars
Donation protected
I am currently volunteering with C.A.R.E, The Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education. We specialize in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of chacma baboons. Baboons in South Africa are considered to be a nuisance species and are often poached, hunted, captured for pet trade, used for witchcraft, and killed due to human conflict. Survivors (often infants clinging to their dead mothers) of these incidents are brought to the centre with horrific psychological and physical trauma.
After their rehabilitation, they are given a chance of freedom. This summer, we have the opportunity to release rehabilitated single males back to the wild! This is mimic natural baboon dispersal behavior and these males will join existing baboon troops.
I am raising $10,000 to purchase 5 GPS Tracking Collars & data subscriptions in order to track individuals after release and keep them safe. This equipment will allow us to track dispersal movements from the release site. The collars send out timely updates on movement and exact location. Warning messages are also sent if an individual moves out of bounds of the reserve or if no movement has been detected, thus allowing C.A.R.E. team to react accordingly.
In addition to monitoring the safety of the baboons on the release, the data from the collar can be used for scientific research to make conclusions on the release. These collars can be used for years to come on more and more individuals and give them chances for freedom!
PinnacleProM D with 2-way communicator collar: $1850 per collar
Total: $9250
This goal can be achieved if 100 people donate just $10 toward these baboons future (that is just two coffees). Any money you can donate is incredibly helpful and so greatly appreciated by the baboons and I.
**I am happy to keep donators updated on the purchasing of the collars and equipment**
