Aloha!

My Name is Frank M. Lawelawe. I’m a recovering drug-addict and alcoholic, who celebrated 20-years, this past April 13, 2017, clean and sober from all mind mood-altering substance. I work as a substance-abuse counselor for over 10-years now at Kahale Pomaika’i. I cooked and feed the homeless for the 10-years also. Being homeless myself, I know the struggles! I just received my Associates degree in Human-Services and I wish to continue on with my Bachelor’s degree also. I regularly volunteer my time by facilitating A-A/N-A meetings on week nights. On my free-time. I work with about eight people, who tried to take their own lives! Yes, Suicide! I meet with these individuals once or twice a month to talk story and to pray. Every day, I thank God for all the people, whom I helped for the last 7-years. Recently, We’ve been seeing a string of suicide on our Island and as a parent and father; I know the pain and loss that comes with losing a child. My daughter died in 2008 and my nephew in 2014.

Who will benefit…
Coming from a small Island, it (suicide) affects everyone! Only because everyone knows each other like family or ohana. We’re such a small tight knit community, where I went to school with your aunty or uncle and my grand-father went to school with your grand-mother. So, yeah! It will benefit the generation that are here now and the generations that are yet to come. Our community, our children, our wives, our husbands, our people, and our small Island will all benefit! Anytime you help save a person’s life! It benefits all of us!

What the funds will be used for…
It will be used for gas, tires, oil, maintenance and to rebuild my van transmission, which my mechanic friend estimated the cost at $3,000. Other costs will be attending off island classes on suicide prevention and intervention to better educate myself and reaching out to the homeless. In the past years. Whenever, I did outreach to individuals(suicidal),I went from Halawa (east-end) or to Papohako(west-end). The money for gas, and maintenance came out of my own pocket. Which I didn’t mind at first, but with the price of our gas being so high, it began to take its toll on me! You see, when my daughter and nephew died. I made a promise to both of them that I will combat suicide as long as I live!!! This has become my “Passion”…..

How soon do I need the funds…
I’m hoping that it comes before another life is lost. The sooner, the better. The first thing that needs to be fixed is my vans transmission, and then I’m good to continue my suicide outreach. I have another vehicle but it’s having motor trouble too. I’ll try to continue my outreach the best I can, but like I said, the gas is just crazy! As soon as can.

What your support will mean…
It means a lot to me, because your support will help me continue giving back to my Island, our children, our wives, our husbands, our mothers, our fathers, our community, and for the promise that I made to my daughter and to my nephew, who’s in my heart daily.

I am grateful for your help…
For 7- years, I was hoping to get some help from people or different organizations, but the process was long and confusing. When, I heard of Gofundme.com, I said to myself that prayers were being answered. Yes! This support will help achieve my goals in helping our Island people get through it (suicide). I can’t guarantee that I will reach everyone in time, but I will do my best to get on it!!!!For that, I am truly Grateful!!!!
