Coming Back to the Land: The Spivey Farm Legacy
Falani Spivey, Nostalgic Farmer

The soil of North Carolina has been calling me home my entire life. Born and raised in Washington DC, I spent childhood summers on my grandparents' Southern farm where the stories of my Great-Grandparents Charlie and Ellen Spivey took root in my soul. Their hands worked this very land in the early 1900s, raising 10 children and countless crops that nourished both body and spirit. Every time I pressed my small hands into this earth as a child, I could feel their presence guiding me toward a future I didn't yet understand.
After years in the city, I finally answered their whispered call to return to our family land. Now, as I walk the same paths where Great-Grandpa Charlie once tended his cattle and Great-Grandma Ellen harvested vegetables for her canning jars, I'm creating an agricultural space that honors their legacy while nurturing new growth. By transforming the Spivey farm into an educational destination that celebrates Black agricultural excellence, I'm not just preserving our family's story—I'm continuing it, adding my own chapter to a narrative that flows like sap through the family tree my ancestors planted generations ago.

Our Family's Roots
In the early 1900s, my Great Grandpa Charlie Spivey did something extraordinary – he purchased this land at a time when Black land ownership was both a radical act of courage and a declaration of hope. Alongside my Great Grandma Ellen, they didn't just build a farm; they built a legacy. Together, they worked this soil, raised 10 children, and created a place where their grandchildren would learn the true meaning of resilience, family, and connection to the land.

Black Land Loss
Black land loss in America represents one of the most significant reversals of economic progress in our nation's history. At their peak in 1910, Black farmers owned approximately 16-19 million acres, but today that number has plummeted to less than 4 million acres—a loss of over 80%. In North Carolina specifically, Black-owned farmland decreased from more than 2 million acres in the early 1900s to roughly 150,000 acres today. By supporting our farm fundraising campaign, you're helping to reverse this troubling historical trend. Your contribution directly enables us to preserve and develop sustainable Black-owned agricultural land, creating opportunities for wealth-building that were systematically denied to previous generations. Together, we can honor the agricultural legacy of Black farmers while building a more equitable food system that benefits our entire community. Join us in transforming historical injustice into a future of agricultural empowerment and food sovereignty.

The Vision: Honoring the Spivey Legacy
What we're building here grows from my great-grandparents' dream:
  • A working farm that honors Great Grandpa Charlie's agricultural wisdom
  • A place where Great Grandma Ellen's food preservation traditions can be taught and shared
  • A learning space where children can understand how the Spivey family's determination created opportunities for generations
  • A community hub that continues our family's tradition of feeding both bodies and souls
  • Family reunion space

The Path Forward: Growing Our Great-Grandparents' Dream
Phase 1: Securing Our Legacy - $100,000
First steps to preserve the Spivey farmland:
Purchase 14 acres of our family's original land
Begin restoring the soil using methods Great Grandpa Charlie would recognize
Create spaces for sharing our family's agricultural knowledge
Plan growing areas that mirror the diversity of their original farm

Phase 2: Building Tomorrow - $50,000
Expanding on their foundation:
  • Install fencing to protect what they worked so hard to build
  • Construct a market stand where we can share our harvest, just like they did
  • Develop teaching spaces to pass on Great Grandma Ellen's preservation wisdom. Restorative homestead practices
  • Create gathering areas where new generations can learn our family's story

Why This Matters
Every part of this project carries forward the Spivey legacy:
  • Preserving the agricultural knowledge passed down through our family
  • Honoring Great Grandpa Charlie and Grandma Ellen's entrepreneurial spirit
  • Keeping alive the traditions of land stewardship they taught their children
  • Creating opportunities for future generations, just as they did

The Time Is Now
When I walk this land, I feel Great Grandpa Charlie and Grandma Ellen's presence in every step. I see them in the old fruit trees they planted, hear their wisdom in the wind that moves through the fields they once tended. Their dream of owning this land wasn't just about farming – it was about creating a foundation for their family's future.
Your contribution helps ensure that the legacy of Charlie and Ellen Spivey continues to grow and thrive. Their story of determination, love, and commitment to family and land deserves to be preserved and shared.

P.S. They say land holds memories. This soil remembers my great-grandparents' footsteps, the laughter of their 10 children, the countless hours spent tending cattle and gardens, and the love that went into every jar Great Grandma Ellen preserved. Now it's my turn to make sure their story continues to grow.
