Save the Lakeside Pharmacy Icons!

The Lakeside Pharmacy icons have been donated to the Reston Historic Trust & Museum and we need your help! With your generous donation, the icons can be cleaned, repaired, and reinstalled in a new permanent exhibit on Lake Anne’s Washington Plaza and remain accessible to the public. We think it is imperative that these icons, which represent an original Lake Anne Plaza store, remain on the plaza at Lake Anne. The New York graphic design firm of Chermayeff and Geismar (now Chermayeff, Geismar & Haviv), was hired by Whittlesey & Conklin, the architects of the plaza, and together they created the storefronts on the plaza. While the main purpose of the Lakeside Pharmacy icons was advertising, the icons are characteristic of the 1960s Pop Art aesthetic and reflected Bob Simon’s wish for whimsical artwork on the plaza. The building was a pharmacy for 44 years, closing in 2014. Since the building will soon be occupied by new businesses, the icons were donated to the Reston Historic Trust & Museum in order to preserve them. Currently, the icons are in storage until they can be cleaned and reinstalled. The installation is being designed by Jeanne Krohn of Krohn Design. The Reston Historic Trust & Museum (RHT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Reston’s past, informing the present, and influencing the future of Reston.
