Help preserve Netherhall’s historic woodland for future generations.

Nestled within Largs, Ayrshire, the Netherhall Private Residential Estate spans 11.5 acres of rich heritage and natural beauty. Once the private grounds of William Thomson (Barron Kelvin), who acquired the original 17-acre site in the late 1800s, Netherhall now stands as a shared legacy, stewarded by 66 co-owners who care for its common areas, including 2.5 acres of wild leisure spaces we call the woodland.

This space is not just a private treasure, it’s a daily refuge for many members of the public. But with public access comes responsibility. Under current Scottish legislation, the burden of maintaining safe access falls entirely on the co-owners. This includes costly tree works, safety enhancements, and ongoing stewardship. The expense for which is burdened to co-owners being rooted in the estate’s historic design and legal structure.

Why We Need Your Help.

The wooded area is densely packed with mature trees, many of which now require urgent pruning or removal due to damage or disease. Without intervention, these trees pose safety risks to all who walk the grounds.

But we don’t want to stop at safety. With your support, we aim to:

Replant trees to promote woodland health, canopy cover and biodiversity.

Install bird & bat boxes, along with planting fruiting trees to support local wildlife.

Add footpaths, fencing and heritage signboards to improve accessibility and comfort where feasible to do so and share the story of our site.

Introduce drainage solutions to protect the land and its users where possible.

Every pound raised will be used directly within the 2.5-acre footprint, helping us meet our legal obligations while enhancing the space for all who enjoy it.

The Netherhall estate is steeped in local heritage. it is a historic site where our woodland management of the trees is managed by a tree preservation order. Everything we do or plan to do is subject to an external approval process, administered by our local authority (no funding is made available to us from said authority to perform any approved tasks). Protecting our site and its future, depends on what we do today. By making your donation, you’re not just helping with maintenance.
