Art for kids #West Oakland

PLACE at Prescott Elementary School  is a wonderful place serving West Oakland children for almost 150 years.  Prescott is the home of the first African American credentialed teacher in California and the Prescott Circus. It is a school that consistently gets high scores for our warm and welcoming school culture. Prescott is a place that in spite of all the disadvantages and challenges is steadily improving our test scores. And yet, there is no money for art. 

Prescott's beloved art teacher, Ms. Judy, has paid her own way by fundraising her own wages for over a decade. All her funding sources have dried up and alas, now the children have no art program.

Ms. Judy is the kind of person you want teaching art to your kids. She challenges her young Prescott charges with math questions as she passes out art supplies. She keeps the art room open during recess as an alternative to the playground. She forages for reclaimed materials, teaching the kids that one person's throw-away is another person's treasure. The art the children bring home from Prescott is treasure, indeed, because Ms. Judy shows them the way. She guides them to an appreciation of art and to their own inner artist.

All funds raised by this campaign will go towards Ms. Judy's wages. Every dollar we can raise is another day of art for Prescott kids.
