Premdan School for the Impoverished

My name is Joshua Gomes and I live in Tampa, Florida. I am a 16-year-old Sophomore in the Biomedical Program at Middleton High School. When I was 6 years old, I had accompanied my sister, Ayesha Gomes when she had volunteered (2008 and 2009) at Premdan School, a school for the slum children of Mumbai. Each of those years, I remember joining my sister on the last day to help her distribute school supplies and candy to all the children. Since then I have always wanted to go back and do the same.

In July of 2017, my mother and I traveled to India and I was fortunate enough to spend time volunteering at the school helping the children and the teachers in the classroom as a teacher’s assistant. On the last day we donated funds and school supplies to all the children in the school. I enjoyed my time in Sr. Asha’s classroom and remember how excited and appreciative the children were when I distributed the school supplies and candy to them.

Premdan School began in 1976 when Sister Felicity began by gathering a small group of slum children and educating them under a tree in the back-garden of St. Anne’s High School (school my mother attended). The Garden school now has 3 Kindergarten classrooms each with a chalk board, miniature student desks and a ceiling fan. There are about 30 students in each classroom. The children attending Premdan school are from poor impoverished backgrounds with little chance of attending the neighboring larger private schools. Premdan school helps provide these children with an education and a midday meal for free. The school is run by Mother Felicity and Sr. Sylvia. At the school, there are three full time teachers who provide the children with an educational foundation involving learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes and the English language. With this foundation, the students have a chance at getting admitted into some of the public and private schools in Mumbai. My mission is to raise awareness for the impoverished youth in India and more specifically raise money to purchase school supplies that are needed at Premdan. I request you all to kindly pledge a modest monetary amount and help me achieve my goal. Premdan’s accounts are audited every year by external government auditors.

I genuinely thank anyone who donates to this worthy cause and I know how much the children and faculty of Premdan would appreciate any amount given. With the help of your donations we can provide these children in need the life they deserve. Premdan means “the gift of love” and I encourage each and everyone of you reading this to share the gift of love to the less fortunate, so we can build a better tomorrow!
