My Premature Nephew, Born at 33 Weeks, Needs Help
Hello, my name is John. My brother, Brian, and his wife just had a premature baby. —they live in the Philippines.
Brian's wife wasn't due to give birth until early July, but unknown to everyone she suffered preeclampsia — this is extremely high blood pressure triggered in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. This condition is not common in the West, but is common in many other countries.
She suffered a seizure and was rushed to a hospital... she required an emergency caesarian section delivery. Fortunately, the little baby boy was delivered successfully. His name is Christian and here's what he looks like:
Christian battled a severe case of pneumonia after birth and also fought to breathe oxygen. He has been relying on a ventilator for his breathing.
Update June 23: Christian is experiencing some breathing difficulties when taken off of Oxygen — doctors have discovered a potential issue with his heart which may be responsible. He will undergo a test on his heart tomorrow morning to try to learn more.
The Financial Situation
The bad news is that my brother and his wife are struggling with paying the hospital bills. Philippine hospitals require payment in-full before discharge and there is no government healthcare available that covers all costs.
At the moment their bill is $8,000 and is expected to climb to $15,000 by the time of discharge. My brother was budgeting for a normal caesarian delivery, so this entire situation has hit him hard financially.
The hospital is looking to discharge their little boy in the coming weeks and we don't have enough money to pay the hospital bill.
Any help you can provide would be extremely appreciated. Money will be used to pay the hospital bills.
