New houses for Cambodian Floating Village families

NEW HOUSES, NEW HOPE FOR CAMBODIAN FLOATING VILLAHE FAMILIES

Prek Toal is one of many floating villages on the shores of Cambodia's great lake, Tonle Sap. The villages rely on the lake for their livelihood. Families mostly engage in fishing and related activities and many have lived in their 'floating' houses for many years.

It's a simple but difficult life
The quality of the lake is threatened by upstream changes to the flow of the mighty Mekong River. The environment risks depletion and the society is threatened. However, the most urgent problem is the badly deteriorated houses in the village.

Houses re-built, one house at a time

Through local villager, Mr AN Hoksan, CEO of non-profit organization 'PREK TOAL MOVING AHEAD ', we are re-building the houses in most need, one at a time.

We have built 4 and hope to re-build another 3 in the coming year. Not only does this activity provide a safe, healthy home for each family, it enables the children in the families to remain in the village and at school, connected with their families.

We also provide an additional activity to fishing by building a small farm including ducks or chickens. The re-built house is simple, with 3 rooms - kitchen, living and sleeping room.

You can join us
We hope to raise $4,500 which will be enough a house build for a family.  So we plan to re-built three houses in yearly. You can help us to give a whole family some hope for a better future.

You will be remembered forever
Your generosity will be very proudly displayed outside the new house. If you would like to meet the family and see the house if you go to Cambodia, you will be welcomed with open arms by Hoksan and taken to meet the family in Prek Toal village, Cambodia.

DONORS' FEEDBACK

I would like to share with you the feedback for our surveys from Ms. Andrea and Ms. Susan, who are our donors and also they had stayed and did trips with my local tours and travel, Prek Toal Tours & Travel, as below:

1. Why did you decide to donate or participate in our project?

'First, I would like to say that both Susan and I have made every donation together.

We are inspired by:

              a) The built-in aspects of the program that address the question of sustainability like chicken/duck farming, floating garden and tourist homestay- these all extend ongoing opportunities for the partner families’ self-reliance.

              b) The selflessness of the Program Director (and his family) whose mission is to help others who have
the greatest need in the village of Prek Toal.
              c) Donations offer very direct support to families with the greatest needs- excellent transparency and
                   accountability.
              d) As home stay guests, we gain and learn a lot (experience the wonderful culture and warm hospitality
of the hosts; see the natural beauty of the area; learn through experience about the needs and
aspirations of the local people)-this program offers a way to express gratitude through sharing - it is
                   “win-win.”

2. Do you have any suggestions about improving the promotion and delivery of our projects?
              a) I have suggested checking with Rotary International in Cambodia, to see if they would partner with
this program. If they did, it would immensely broaden the reach.
              b) I wonder about involving volunteer environmental engineers to consider if there might be a healthy
option for toilets like a composing toilet that could provide compost for the floating gardens- the
practice of dumping raw sewerage in the river is not healthy.
