Hey y'all! As many of you know, my sister Jessica Martin Wingfield went for an routine physical and lab appointment on May 12th and we have been on a roller coaster ever since. She was diagnosed with a giant right sided Renal angiomyolipoma. The largest dimension of it is 25cm. Basically she has a large mass growing off her right kidney. All praise to God that her kidney is perfectly healthy and has learned to function with this giant mass attached to it. Glenwood referred her to LSU Shreveport because she was told "no one in Monroe is going to touch it".
Once at LSU she was told they would have to remove the mass, the kidney, and the tip of rib 11. This news sent us all in a tailspin because we were under the impression that the kidney would be fine. Following the advice of family and friends, she sought a second opinion. Our hometown physician Dr. Slusher set her up for a second opinion appointment at Regional Urology where Dr. Henderson explained the embolization process. Embolization is when the radiologist goes in the groin like a heart catch and threads a catheter up to the Abdomen where coils are placed to cut off blood flow from the kidney to the mass. This would cause the mass to die. The downside to that was described as symptoms such as stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, flu like symptoms, and high fever for 3 to 4 weeks during the mass dying process. The upside was that this process would not damage the kidney and she wouldn't have the thorocoabdominal scar LSU had insisted she would have to have. We were all thrilled and the procedure was set up for June 15th at Christus Highland. That day came and we were hit with another change of plans. The mass was so big that after 3 hours in the operating room they were only able to embolize 2/3 of the mass, requiring a second embolization session in 4 weeks. We were also told that even after the second session that the embolization process was only going to shrink a mass this size 10%, so the first go round would likely make it go from 25cm to 22cm. Meaning after the second procedure she will still need to have surgery to remove the dead mass. The good news is the risk of bleeding spontaneously has been decreased significantly. The bad news is Jessica has terrible insurance and has acquired medical bills a little over $5,000.00 already and has only had the first step of a long process completed.
