Indonesia: Tsunami and Earthquake

Pray for Indonesia: Palu/Donggala Earthquake victims

We are the School of Peace Indonesia—an interfaith forum that focuses on non-violence actions and social justice, together with local volunteers, organizing this fundraising to help ease ones in difficulties of the victims of the magnitude 7.7 earthquakes and tsunami that devastated Palu, Donggala, and Mamuju in Central Sulawesi Friday night. Current information shows that the death toll had increased to over 2000 and the rescue teams are continuing to identify the victims under the ruins.

Now, as we might be aware, the emergency response has taken place for more than two weeks since these catastrophes that hit on September 28. Undeniably, these tragedies have left the victims with the experience of traumas and fears. Let alone, the subsequent earthquake continues to shake some places in Indonesia including Palu.

These people are moving forward to counter these fears. Seeing the updates from the field, particularly, the power of voluntarism made us believe that they are optimist people. These volunteers together with the community have taken extra miles to work for its sustainability.

As trauma is the most common effects after disasters, as the hygiene concern becomes problematic particularly after the areas covered by the muddy flood (tsunami), for that reason, the volunteers are now extending their focus on trauma healing activities, the nutritious kitchen, and the free health examination.

Through these activities, these volunteers continue to instill confidence and independence with the hope that the struggle of this community will end soon. They have established a mass kitchen to serve nutritious food and is managed by our volunteering nutritionist. Also, they have decided to invite one professional cook each week to help this community particularly women to learn new menu as well as to increase their knowledge about the culinary service.

In this mass kitchen, they rotated work. Volunteers and community divide roles. As they continue to implement this nutritious kitchen; hopefully, this experience can be adopted in other refugee camps. For now, they come with the commitment to provide 100 packages of nutritious food each day for babies, kids, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, sick people, and the elders.

We have a doctor who takes responsibility to keep this community healthy and hygiene. He conducts regular health exam for the less severe illness and refers other victims to the hospitals when they needed serious treatment.

We have several volunteers on location who keep the shelter alive and outside location who work cooperatively to make this community forward. This is an active community, which I can feel that the power of solidarity manifested in this struggle. This is a strong community that profoundly shows the leap of faith and hope that allows them to endure.

This narrative teaches us what charity means, the charity that is demonstrated by trust, humanist, and compassion, without these all, it will fall under the notion of false charity/generosity.

This narrative from the field teaches us how to be positive. Volunteers’ courage and kindness manifested in this movement tell us that they are true volunteers. They share compassion and love. Indeed, their kindness is contagious. The survivors, you have shown us what does it mean to be an optimist despite in such difficulties.

Our friends are the survivors and are now continuing to help others in the areas. We are accepting volunteer work and funds. We try to accept goods (international), but because of the delivery fees and times, this will delay the help. Our care can ease one in difficulty. Have a blessed and peaceful day. If you want to be part of this struggle. Let continue to support this grassroots advocacy and show solidarity that they are not alone.  Together we rise again.

with Love,

Volunteers
