Hello, our names are Yadira, Yenise and Uriel Torres please take the time to read a brief description of our mother’s current distress:
Our mother, Maria Torres, is a loving mother, wife, sister and aunt. She is deeply rooted in her Catholic faith and is an adamant advocate for peace. At the start of 2017, our 63-year-old mother started to profusely vomit, rapidly losing weight and her body gradually weakened with each passing day. After multiple physician and hospital visits—various x-rays and blood tests could not reveal the source of our mother’s suffering. Eventually, after routine tests and checkups, a CT scan revealed a cancerous tumor located on her liver and she was diagnosed with Stage 4 - Bile Duct Cancer.
In early May, our mother started Chemotherapy and Radiation treatment and we witnessed her energetic light quickly faded out. Weekly Chemo and Radiation treatments are both physically and emotionally exhausting for both Maria and her family.
It is widely known that cancer is both a physically and financially stressful battle. Maria has very limited medical insurance as it does not provide enough coverage for medical treatments and procedures—making it nearly impossible to pay for her medical bills. Within the past 2 months, we have been billed over $20,000 for just treatments alone, not including other necessary procedures. We have used many of our life savings to cover some of these fees. However, they are not sufficient to cover the expenses for this strenuous battle. Despite these harsh circumstances, Maria continues to fight and firmly grasp on to hope and her faith.
