PR Disaster Relief, with Love

Donation protected
Hello to all of my amazing family, friends, fellow nursing and medical colleagues, and connections alike! I've received official confirmation of my deployment to Puerto Rico from October 31 - November 7 to serve as a volunteer nurse in the Disaster Relief efforts for our brothers and sisters in PR. As hard as this is for me to ask for help, especially monetarily, I'm putting whatever little pride aside because it's what my heart tells me. I am seeking the assistance from all those willing and able and those who feel so very strongly about recent happenings as I do!  This may be my first of many additional mission trips to PR because as you know, Puerto Rico's recovery and support needed will last for many months and even years to come!

I will be joining New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA)'s medical and solidarity mission, sponsored by and in partnership with Union General de Trabajadores (UGT - ‪www.ugtpr.org), the healthcare union in Puerto Rico. I will be assigned to one of 8 Solidarity Centers throughout the island, prepared by UGT. My goal for these monies collected will be to not only provide free medical care to the affected population in PR, but to also help the Centro Operacion Solidarias (Center of Operations and Solidarity) fund the use of free mobile or satellite phones to contact families, provide assistance to unemployed workers, and educate the community on hygiene and water filtration. Your donation will go to providing much-needed medicine, medical supplies and consultations, and assistance of all volunteers.

Please share my plea for help widely to all of your sources as well! There are thousands of victims in Puerto Rico, who are in dire need of doctors and nurses to assist in urgent and life-saving medical care.  As you may or may not know, there was a shortage of doctors and medical personnel before Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which has only been exacerbated by hurricane Irma.  In addition, the media has not fully reported the critical and life threatening situations in the more rural areas of Puerto Rico.

My hope here is to promote awareness of the severity of the crisis and gain support for the victims during this process of rebuilding. I will also try my best to report back and document all I can (though may be limited given the limitations I will face with cell phone and electronics use), as I would truly love for you to see how very valuable your contributions are!

This isn't so much as for me but for our lovely Isla del Encanto, that which needs to be built back up, and I have faith it WILL be. EVERY single dollar and offering counts!

Puerto Rico se levanta! Porque todo se puede! This is all possible by us joining hands to share in the love we have for humanity, for one another. Thank you for your time and support!

With much love always,
Barbara, RN, CDE
