Tom's leukemia expenses

I am Tom Corcoran, 67 yrs old, from just outside Philadelphia, Pa.  living on social security and my wifes social security and her pay from working in a school. My pension money ran out when I was in the hospital.

I was diagnosed with MDS (pre leukemia) in February 2016. I had chemo for that for six months which involved two shots in my stomach for seven days each month. Results were negative.  A bone marrow biopsy showed no change to the leukemia. That drug is the only one approved for MDS.

I next went the University of Pennsylvania cancer center for other options. I was put on a clinical trial for a new drug.  This involved wearing a pump and bag for 7 days each month 24 hours a day.  I had to get a hotel room near the hospital in case of adverse effects from the drug.  After three months they got results but not what they wanted. It had progressed to AML, an acute leukemia in the bone marrow.  This was January 12, 2017. I had to get admitted in the hospital immediately and spent eight weeks there on two rounds of heavy chemo that killed the leukemia but also took out my bone marrow along with my immune system.

I went back in the hospital for another month after 3 or 4 weeks to recover. Then I had  more chemo for 3 days to kill off the remaining bone marrow. I received a stem cell transplant in May 9, 2017. I have been fighting leukemia and it's aftermath for about 19 months. I was cured (hopefully) of the leukemia but the chemo treatments affected other parts of my body such as my muscles. I dropped over fifty pounds and a lot of that was muscle.

I still go to Penn twice a month and have blood work done twice a week along with physical therapy twice a week for my atrophied muscles from being in bed for three of the first 5 months of the year. I have had visiting  nurses to draw blood and change my pic line since July. They come twice a week but insurance only pays for one visit a meek. I take about nine medications a day to fight infection along with anti rejection medicine. I need to be revaccinated for all the ones I have had from polio to pneumonia.

 The donations would be to pay existing medical and pharmacy bills and ones yet to come. It would also help with transportation cost in getting to the UofP hospital.
