Hello Everyone-
My name is Carmen and I live outside of Chicago. As you know Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, including the town where most of my family resides, Naranjito. It's located in the mountains not far from San Juan. Naranjito was hit hard, with the eye of the hurricane going directly over them. There are a lot of damaged houses, landslides and road blocks in their town, making transportation and communication almost impossible in some areas.
A couple of days before Hurricane Maria hit, they had just received power from after Hurricane Irma. Communication and power is out in Naranjito, as it is with a lot of Puerto Rico and its going to be a long road for restoration.
My family is feeling strong and optimistic despite their losses. For the moment they have enough supplies of food and water but they have requested batteries and if possible, generators. USPS and UPS have not resumed deliveries to Puerto Rico but it's expected to in the next week or so. We are starting to purchase supplies to send them, including batteries, battery and solar powered devices, and other supplies to get them through this rough time. I'll add more ideas as I get them.
With the money we raise we will first buy the initial supplies they have requested- batteries, and a few solar powered and battery powered devices such as flashlights and chargers. But the bulk of this campaign is to buy a couple of generators and have enough to ship them. The shipping is going to be the majority of our expenses as it's costly and we need to assure that they arrive there safely. We would also happily accept donations of batteries directly too: they have specifically requested AA and D batteries and I'm sure other sizes will be helpful. If we find we are unable to get generators shipped there or we have extra we will send the money to them to try to buy what they can there or to help start repairs. If their needs change I will definitely update everyone. Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to help. It means a lot to us.
