Help us help Vera!

Our friend, Vera, lives in Norristown, Pennsylvania and for years has struggled with being a single mother of 3. Currently, though she has serious health problems, she works as much as she is able to for minimum wage, assisting people with severe developmental disabilities.  She has 1 teenager in high school and another attending community college while living at home.  They barely make ends meet. In fact, because of long term limited income they often don’t make it. None of this is new but there is a crisis that has no solution without help.

Yesterday Vera’s electricity was turned off. In addition to her current bill she has been on a contract to repay a very old bill from 10 years ago. At that time she had to take this on herself because her ex did not share the burden of these old bills.  She has paid toward this for years but because they continue to add charges for being even one day late it grows rather than reducing.  Right now she cannot get them to turn the electricity back on in spite of her MD calling to let them know she has significant medical risks.  Vera has COPD and other heart and pulmonary problems that require access to electricity for administering medications.  Her home is on a well and without the electric pump there is no water for drinking or plumbing.  With two kids, a cat and a dog at home, her options of places to stay in the short term are limited. The family has been returning to sleep at night with their pets in the dark.

We want to try to raise funds to pay this old amount to PECO (the utility company) as that is the only way to get them to turn the power back on.  We don’t know how long it will take to try to find legal and consumer aid to try to negotiate another plan. That could take weeks to months. In the meantime, they are in the dark!  This will require at least $6000.  When that is paid they will turn the electricity back on and then Vera will have a chance of staying current with her monthly bill.

We know that there are so many situations like this and Vera is not alone in the struggle.  You have probably supported many people and causes in this way.  But you can make a real difference to someone we love.  The great thing is that even $10, $20 or $50 dollars from each person can make it possible to manage the unmanageable for one family.  This situation is urgent and we are hoping to help now.

Please know that we understand if you choose not to contribute and we will be in deep gratitude for all of those who give this consideration.  If you receive this and feel willing to pass it on to others please do.  We have no idea how this will go but should we reach our goal or beyond…. we promise you that it will be used wisely to help them get safely back into their home and survive these difficult times.  Let’s get the lights back on!

 Thank you so much!
