Pots and Pans For Refugees

Hi, I'm Zoey, and my bat mitzvah is this spring. As my bat mitzvah service project, I chose to meet with Jewish Family Services (JFS) and find out what I could do to help. After meeting with their Senior Director, I decided to collect pots and pans for refugees.
Living in America is hard for refugees because of all the hate and backlash they receive from some people who don’t respect them. Another thing that is difficult is that they might not speak English or may have a strong accent, and this can make it hard to advocate for what they need.
Jewish Family Services (JFS) is an organization that cares for people who are in difficult times. Some of their programs include a food bank, programs for the homeless, and refugee services. In the refugee program they help to supply housing, food, household needs, medical services and job placement.
JFS does not only help people who are Jewish. They help refugees of any religion or race. Many Seattle-area refugees are from Bhutan, Burma, East Africa, Iraq, Iran and the former Soviet Union.
Pots and pans are often forgotten when people are donating to refugees but are essential to be able to cook food. Being able to make your own food communicates dignity and self-respect. By giving new pots and pans, not hand-me-downs, we show that, as a community, we welcome refugees and care about them.
Working with JFS’s refugee services team, I learned that the pots and pans that would be most useful are an 8 quart pot ($29), a 12 quart pot ($32), and a 12” saute pan with a lid ($36). My goal is to be able to give 100 pots and pans to JFS to be distributed to the refugee community. If you could donate one of those specific amounts, or as much as you are able to give, we will purchase the pots and pans and deliver them to JFS in early May.
