Help Salt Spring Island fund postpartum services for families during the precious weeks after baby is born, when life is FULL ON!
As many of you know, growing a family can be a very challenging process and helping hands are always needed, but for some the postpartum time is extremely difficult. There is a lot to learn and do when you have kids, and adapting to a new life with a new baby requires support from other adults. A lot of people here do not have the chance to live close to their blood relatives, which makes it even harder as family is usually the most prominent support and help.
New families need a tremendous amount of support and information. Postpartum Doulas can assist during this precious time and have training to suit each family’s cultural styles and needs. Some of their skills include: practising traditions that “mother the mother”, providing breastfeeding information and support, taking care of mother and her newborn, doing physical chores, listening and encouragement, caring for other children, as well as demystifying challenges with the correct application of modern wisdom. A postpartum doula supports a new mother to get the rest she needs and companions her through unknown thoughts, feelings, and needs in order to help ease and reduce anxieties.
The Salt Spring Island Doula Collective has paired up with Billie Woods, to fundraise so it can provide some Postpartum Doula support free of charge to families who register for the program. The Collective anticipates having enough funds to launch the program offering packages of free support to families in winter 2019-2020. The program is called: Doulas At Your Doorstep: It Takes an Island!
