Postlude for Sophia

Donation protected
Dear friends,

Earlier this week, my dear, sweet, irrepressibly energetic and mentally active 62-year-old mother, Sophia Gorlin, suffered a massive stroke that cut off the blood supply to both sides of her brain. The doctors informed us that she was extremely unlikely ever to wake up, and we - my father Boris and I - began the heartwrenching process of saying our goodbyes.  This morning we said one last goodbye as mom passed away peacefully around 3:15am, feeling no discomfort or pain.

My mom filled our lives with music in more ways than one. Not only through the chords and melodies that emanated from the room where she taught her piano and music theory lessons; not only through the innovative book series she wrote and published to codify her meticulously developed music theory teaching method; not only through my own 10 magical years of violin and vocal performance studies, which she inspired and facilitated at every step. More than that, my mom lived her life with the passion, spontaneity, and emotional immediacy of a Chopin Fantasy-Impromptu. She traveled voraciously and widely, she took on new intellectual and musical challenges without hesitation, and she loved her family, friends, and students with a visceral sincerity that defied words.

Through the trying ordeal we have undergone as a family over these last few days, I have felt more clearly than ever the depth of our love for one another.  Unfortunately our love will not be sufficient to pay for mom's medical bills and the cost of a proper funeral. If you know my dad, you know the unassuming heroism with which he has supported his beloved wife and wider community of family and friends throughout the years. Yet it is not easy for him to ask for support when he needs it. And so I'm spreading the word on both our behalves. Please help us honor our beloved Sophia in the manner she deserves. Let us write her a postlude that is worthy of the beautiful music she has given us.

Any contribution helps, however small. For anyone wishing to pay their respects in person, the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 19, at 2:30 PM, at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 N. Michigan Road, Zionsville, IN 46077.

Thank you,
Gena (on behalf of Boris and Gena)
