Puerto Rico is still in a state of crisis. In the wake of Hurricane María, mass flooding and destruction left all of the island's 3.4 million US citizens without power, and many without running water. As of October 6th, about 90% of the island is still without electricity and many without running water or safe drinking water. Basic resources have been hard to come by, help has been slow to arrive, and survival is still a pressing concern in some areas of the island.
The governor of Puerto Rico said that María was “the worst hurricane in a century,” and that rebuilding will be a tremendously difficult undertaking.
The people of Puerto Rico are in dire need, but thankfully you can help!
The Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry has pledged to help support relief efforts on the island. We are not alone in this effort -- our fellow student organizations, faculty, staff, and student leaders from throughout the University have been committed to supporting us. Students from the University of Dayton School of Law have also recently reached out to us in support of our campaign. We would love to add you to our list of supporters!
All contributions we collect will be donated directly to UNICEF USA and their relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
Every $28 we collect will provide a kit containing basic, essential supplies such as water purification tablets, a water bucket with lid, water containers, soap, toothpaste, detergent and sanitary pads. The supplies will help children and their families keep clean and healthy, protecting them from diseases that can occur after the loss of equipment and infrastructure and the disruption of a safe water supply.
UNICEF is a global leader in emergency response, last year reaching children in 344 humanitarian emergencies across 108 countries.
