I took my very first trip to Paris, France all alone, tout seule, in March 1985. I filled a journal with drawings and observations of my trip. As I read through my journal three decades later, I relive those days of my youth, of days when my life was enriched with a special and meaningful experience that enlivens me to this day.
The American writer, Ernest Hemingway, lived in Paris when he was a young man as well as in different periods of his adult life. He wrote several of his classics from cafes in Paris. Hemingway said, "If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast."
This is so true. I experienced living in Paris for a few weeks in my youth. I have these memories that follow me throughout my life.
Now, 30 some years later since that first trip, I am returning again to the City of Light. I am turning this special opportunity into an artist residency in Paris. I will be very busy from sun up to sun down capturing local scenery in Paris, filling journals with drawings and notes of my visit. These references will be used to develop small paintings of Paris when I return to Seattle. I may even create a small book of drawings and writings from my visit.
To support this residency, I created Postcards from Paris.
This campaign will help cover the airfare and ground transportation for this trip.
I will make little watercolor and pencil sketches of Paris scenery on postcards and will mail them from Paris, France to supporters of this project. Would you like one?
Each postcard is $25 and includes French postage.
The postcard may get a few postmarks on it, but that will be part of its charm. Plus, you will receive a unique original artwork capturing the charm one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
