Postage for Living Offline
Donation protected
I will be spending the year 2020 offline. From January 1st until December 31st, I will not use the internet.
I will be journalling daily throughout my year offline and sending out monthly updates by mail. Find more information and sign up at: http://www.aronr.com/home
For $11, I will be able to send a year's worth of mail-outs to someone in Canada.
For $16, I will be able to send a year's worth of mail-outs to someone in the USA.
For $32, I will be able to send a year's worth of mail-outs to someone internationally.
For $50 or more, I will send you a special holiday mail-out in December 2020, featuring highlights from my year offline.
For $100 or more, I will send you all twelve mail-outs as personalized, handwritten letters.
The internet has become a big part of my social life, school, career, community work, downtime, and consumer habits. Through spending a year offline, I aim to uncover how my life is being coordinated for an ideal digitally connected person, and then to explore the implications of these digital expectations—for my learning, my health, my relationships, and my impact on the environment and global labour relations.
I hope that this experience will highlight ways that my life and world are changed without or with the internet. I am not trying to advocate for an internetless lifestyle. I just want to think about what a more critical and careful approach to internet-use may look like.
Following my year offline, I will take what I’ve learnt into the classroom. I will be working with high school students and teachers, exploring their online experiences and how the internet affects their lives, learning, and issues of social and environmental justice.
