Porto to Budapest on a Bicycle

Dear reader, my name is Peter Nagy a Hungarian born and raised. I spent my last 6 years living all around Europe, while I had an adventurous time and searched for answers. Earlier this year, my friend that I worked for, lost her business. I had to decide what to do, stay in Portugal, and look for a new job or move on.  

A few weeks passed since then and I was sitting above my breakfast, still jobless, but positive, when the idea rushed through my mind. I am going to cycle back to Budapest! 




The Vision Behind The Trip

I am riding my bike from Porto to Budapest in mid-July.  My vision for this trip is threefold.  First, just the adventure in itself that I am seeking again. When you have an idea or a dream and you try to make it happen, it gives you a feeling that you are in control over your life, not to mention the happiness and the rush of energy that you gain through it. Going toward my romanticized goals made me understand myself, taught me how to fight for a better me, how to overcome obstacles, to make a clear line between good and bad, and what is necessary and redundant. And finally but not last it taught me how to be me, to accept myself and grow. 

Second, I believe in a place where people help each other to reach their goals, where they raise their voice against injustice, they understand, appreciate, accept, and care for another. They aim for a better tomorrow by observing all their surroundings, note the problems, and seek the best solutions. All of this, unfortunately, does not work very well in Hungary. For many years instead of taking care of this particular issue, I decided to go far away from home, and bury my head in the sand, because it was easier than to face the problems.  By the years I realized that running away from problems or hiding, trying to forget them does not solve the situation.  My intention is to change and turn things around. Through honest and truthful conversation, taking the right actions toward a better system. I strongly believe that we need to build bridges between gaps, need to add another level of connection between people to build a system that accepts its weaknesses, take it into account, and try to make it better, instead of shy away or fade the problems. This is my dream and, I was not able to communicate this to others for years. I was afraid that I am too small and I can not do such a thing. But as you will see small parts can add up and become one integer. 

Finally,  opportunities like this open doors to other opportunities, which can lead to stability and more freedom. My intuition is to establish an environment where I can approach my ideas, help others grow, and to start a new chapter in my life. I see this as the first gateway toward my other ideas and acts.


The Trip


I am going to leave on the 15th of July from Porto. The total distance that I will cover is around 3800 km. It will take me approximately a month to get through the North of Portugal and Spain, the South of France then Switzerland and Austria with Hungary at the end. I would like to record as much as I can of my trip, to share everything from the beginning until the end. Therefore I am going to make a movie after my trip. Meanwhile, I am on the road I would like to publish pictures, shorter videos on my social media. 


Why Crowdfund?

I had previously tried to make sponsorships with companies for my older trip, without any success. I firmly believe in the power of people and connections. Since my very first post about the Porto-Budapest trip, I have been already contacted by several people offering help.  We are going through strange times, many people are getting into bad situations, but the world won't stop, so neither I. With your help I could make the trip more enjoyable and safer, record better quality videos and most importantly I do not have to worry about my expenses, as I do not work since the pandemic started. 


Your Impact:

Any contribution you make will go straight into the project. I need 1300€ that would cover all my expenses. 

The 1300€ I hope to earn will pay for:


mostly the equipment that I am missing, such as 
- pair of new wheelset (the old rims are worn)

- new pedals and shoes (for the long-distance ride)

-proper bicycle bags that I can attach to the frame

-GoPro camera to record better quality

And the other part is additional smaller costs, but most of it will be the daily 10€ max that I am planning to spend on the trip, the rest would go on smaller purchases like inner tubes, tools, lights, bar-tape and so on.

If we reach the goal, I can start my journey with the best equipment, without any worries, fully focused, and extremely happy! 

What else to know?

On the same day that I make this crowdfunding site alive, I will send out sponsorship requests to several shops, brands across Portugal. In the case that I find a sponsor/s, I am going to adjust the amount, also to take the items off the list. I will try to update the site as frequently as I can do. In the case of not reaching the goal, I am going to focus on getting the most necessary items.
