Steven Hubbard was a man of many traits and could literally build anything from the ground up. He was a successful contractor, and treated the people closest to him with a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it more than he did. people in his circle like they has always been the guy who treated everyone like they were important and as if he had a heart of gold to give them.

He always made sure to show up, even if he was late... which he usually almost always was, saying, “I'm on my way".  That was one of his infamous lines, as well as claiming “the Italian version of relaxation was gardening”. He would laugh with a laugh that still remains in my head to this day.

Steve was a hard worker and always made people laugh and went out of his way to make everyone feel special. He was the provider to his mother, who is 84 years old and currently is left to care for him.

He was kind enough to take in his nephew, whom had been having a rough time adjusting to being moved from one place to the next and whom had fell in with the wrong crowd where his mother, Vicki, lived in Florida, which evidently led him out to CA.

Since his uncle, Steve, lived in the same city as he was residing in at the time, his uncle offered him a place to stay and Matthew, his nephew, gladly accepted and everything seemed fine for the next 2-3 years that he lived at his home. However, that all changed and forever impacted Steve and his family during the night after Labor Day weekend.

On September 5, 2017, he was brutally attacked with a hammer by his nephew while he was sound asleep, leaving him to die, Matt fled the scene of the crime, unknowing if his uncle was deceased or barely holding onto his dear life. Steve’s 84 year old mother found him covered in blood, lacerations on his face, open skull fractures, his eye smashed like roadkill in the street. He was unable to speak and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to try and save his life. He underwent numerous surgeries, including facial reconstruction surgery, brain surgery, and was induced into a medical coma, due to the severity of his injuries and massive swelling of his brain and face. He would undergo many more surgeries to attempt to save his life, including having his jaws wired shut(his jaw was broken), removal of his eye and skull, tracheostomy, g-tube placement, brain surgery and is expected to have to undergo more surgeries once the doctor determines he has been stabilized enough to undergo the procedures.

My cousin(Steve’s nephew, Matt) lived at the same house and during his time living at Steve’s home, Steve treated him like gold and essentially raised his nephew as like he was his own son...he was even planning on buying him a car to get around town and go to a job that he was trying to find for him at the time this happened.  It was completely unexpected and out of the ordinary. We had no way of knowing Matthew was even capable of doing such a horrendous act. Apparently, we were in the dark and he apparently was not mentally sane and -almost succeeded in taking my dad's life.

As my dad, Steve Hubbard, was trying to block his face with his hand to lessen the damage brought on by the blows of the hammer, my cousin continued to hit him repeatedly with the hammer, smashing his eyeball, shattering the bones in his face(not just some but ALL his face bones were shattered like an egg), his eye crushed to the point it was literally hanging out of the eye socket like roadkill that had just been ran over by a semi-truck, his metacarpals hit so many times that there was no bone to mend together and therefore would have to be replaced with a titanium plate and a skin graft taken from the inside of his thigh and somehow attached to the titanium plate on his hand.

My cousin left him to die and didn't even call for help, running away from the scene without a care in the world as to whether my dad lived or died.  The only thing that mattered to Matt was that he had to get out of the area because he knew he would be taken to jail had he stayed.

My dads injuries were so severe that they weren't sure if he was going to make it out alive, having to perform emergency surgery and induced into a coma. His brain had severe swelling and he was unable to speak or comprehend what happened to him.

To date, the list of procedures that my dad has undergone are quite extensive, including but not limited to Having  his eyeball removed, his jaws wired shut, a trachea collar and gtube, his skull removed due to extensive brain swelling, every bone in his face was literally shattered by being repeatedly struck with the blunt force object, skin graft on his hand, had to have facial reconstruction surgery, plates put in his head and face, has an extremely difficult time trying to remember things and saying what he thinking, still can't walk, and probably will need speech therapy, physical therapy, a prosthetic eye.

The doctor has been wanting to discharge my dad once his trachea collar is removed and he will have no other choice than to come home.  Currently we are hoping to raise enough money to cover his in-home care, help my grandma out with living expenses, get him more therapy and try to reduce the cost of the medical bills(they are currently at 1million and counting).

Please donate or share the page to spread the word and help poppy get well again.

He will be discharged this Saturday, 3 days before his 61st birthday. He needs assistance and is still unable to care for himself and we need all the money we can raise to hire in home care, rehabilitation, and still have to get him a prosthetic eye and additional surgery on his jaw and plastic surgery on his face.

For anyone that has had the pleasure of knowing my dad, he has always done everything and anything he can to make others happy or feel good.

Please see it in your heart to help raise funds to assist in the costs of Steve returning home this weekend.

he really needs the help right now. It's been an extremely difficult time for us and we have had to learn about traumatic brain injury and every aspect surrounding this devastating tragedy. Thank you all for taking the time to help and get this page shared.
