Maine Poor People’s Campaign

On April 13th members of the Maine Poor People’s Campaign embarked on a media tour that stopped throughout the state and culminated with an event in Brewer at Food and Medicine. The day included stops in Lewiston at Raise op and at the South End Teen Center in Waterville where we discussed not only the obstacles faced by the people living in these communities but also the amazing work being done to overcome them. Throughout the day we had the pleasure of meeting and hearing the stories of so many people directly impacted by systemic poverty and the other evils the Poor People’s Campaign has set out to fight. Now we are asking for help so we can send as many of these amazing individuals as possible to the Poor People’s Campaign Action Congress in D.C. in June. The money raised will be used for the registration fees, housing, and transportation for anyone who would otherwise not be able to take part in this incredible event. The Moral Action Congress is an important opportunity for training and community building and will include a forum with presidential candidates and also launch the Poor People’s Campaign Moral and Constitutional Budget,.

The Poor People’s Campaign was originally started by Martin Luther King jr. in 1968 and has been recently resurrected by Reverend Drs. Liz Theoharis and William Barber II.
The mission of the Poor People’s Campaign: a national call for moral revival is to change the moral narrative and to fight poverty, not the poor. To learn more visit www.poorpeoplescampaign.org
