En tiempos de crisis es muy importante mantenernos unidos y ayudarnos mutuamente en todo lo que sea posible. Las consecuencias de esta pandemia mundial no se distribuyen equitativamente, por lo que desafortunadamente algunos países más vulnerables se ven mucho más afectados que otros. Dentro de los países más perjudicados a nivel mundial se encuentra Ecuador, país natal de 3 integrantes de nuestra banda llamada Ponte Pilas. 

Ecuador registra más de 31,000 casos confirmados y alrededor de 1500 personas fallecidas a causa del COVID-19, aunque se especula que son muchas más. El número de muertos y la tasa de mortalidad del 4.9% se encuentran entre las peores del mundo. Hay escenas terroríficas y apocalípticas sucediendo en el país. Los hospitales sobrepasaron inmediatamente su capacidad de atención y la medicinas son muy poco accesibles y escasas. Los servicios funerarios colapsaron por la alta demanda, lo que provocó que cuerpos sean abandonados en las calles, otros puestos en ataúdes de cartón y otros apilados en grandes cantidades en las morgues. Y por si esto fuera poco, hay miles de personas que han perdido su trabajo y no tienen cómo proveer ni siquiera comida para sus familias en estos críticos.

Actualmente la banda se encuentra en Berlín y es sumamente deprimente para nosotros ver desde tan lejos cómo esta pandemia está repercutiendo tan fuertemente en nuestro país. Es por eso que no podíamos quedarnos con los brazos cruzados y decidimos crear este GoFundMe para poder aportar con nuestro grano de arena y ayudar a los que más lo necesitan.

Nuestra ayuda será direccionada a Monte Sinaí en Guayaquil, uno de los sectores más pobres de todo el país. En Monte Sinaí la extrema pobreza hace a sus habitantes muy sensibles ante sucesos catastróficos como una pandemia o la paralización de la economía. La mayoría de las familias que residen en este sector tienen sólo un trabajador proveedor, que aparte percibe un ingreso menor al salario mínimo vital (400 USD). Menos de la mitad de esta población tiene acceso a primaria y por ende sus oportunidades son reducidas, provocando que su día a día se centre en ver cómo sobrevivir. Las familias de este sector se están enfrentando ante una devastadora crisis y están luchando por poder comer un día a la vez. 

Si estas personas ya necesitan nuestra ayuda constantemente, es en este momento cuando aún más debemos ayudarlas. Por este motivo nos hemos puesto en contacto con la fundación caritativa Hogar de Cristo para contribuir recaudando fondos para los más necesitados. Esta fundación, que es conocida por construir casas y ayudar a las comunidades en otras múltiples formas, se encargará de que el dinero recaudado sea dirigido, en forma de comida y medicina principalmente, a los más necesitados de Monte Sinaí.

It is very important to stay together and help each other in whatever way possible in times of crisis. The consequences of this global pandemic do not spread equally, disproportionately affecting poorer and more vulnerable countries. Unfortunately, among those countries, is Ecuador, the home of 3 members of our band Ponte Pilas. 

Ecuador registers 31,000 confirmed cases to date and around 1500 deaths due to COVID-19, though there are widely believed to be many more. The number of deaths and the mortality rate of 4.9% are amongst the highest in the world. There are catastrophic scenes happening across the country. The hospitals exceeded their assistance capacity immediately, medicines are hardly accessible and scarce. Funeral services have collapsed due to the high demand, resulting in many corpses being placed on the streets, in carton coffins or stacked up in great quantities at the morgues. If that were not enough, thousands of people have lost their jobs and do not have the means to provide food for their families in these critical times.

The band is currently quarantined in Berlin and Edinburgh and it is extremely difficult for us to watch how this pandemic is tearing Ecuador apart. Hence, we decided to act and create this GoFundMe to try and aid the people who are unjustly suffering the most.

Our aid will be directed to Monte Sinaí in Guayaquil, one of the poorest districts in the country. In Monte Sinaí the extreme poverty makes its population very vulnerable against catastrophic events like a pandemic or the paralyzation of the economy, both of which are currently happening. The majority of the families who reside here depend entirely on one person for their household income, that is normally also below the official minimum salary of the country. Less than half of this population have access to primary school and therefore their working opportunities are scarce, resulting in most of them making a living day-to-day. Today these families are struggling to eat and survive during this devastating crisis.

As these people already needed our support, now is the time when we should intervene to help them. Thus, we have established an agreement with the charitable foundation Hogar De Cristo, by which we will help them raise money for the people in Monte Sinaí. This foundation, which is known for building houses and helping the poorest communities in a number of ways, will make sure that all donations raised, in the form of food and medicine, reach the most affected families of Monte Sinaí.
