Ponderosa Park Needs Your Help! We are a 1,000 acre residential community a few miles north of Goldendale, Washington in the wild land urban interface. We have been a recognized Firewise Community for more than 11 years. We do community work parties to reduce fuel that feeds wildfires. This is an ongoing endeavor to create defensible space. We limb, thin trees and remove slash and bitterbrush. As a Firewise Community we do education for fire safety. We work in conjunction with our local fire departments and the Department of Natural Resources to decide what projects and education are needed. We have participated in making wild fire protection plans for our community and for Klickitat County.
We have obtained several grants in the past that helped us make defensible space around homes, roads and the perimeter. The biggest expense is chipping. Now the rules for obtaining funding have changed. The community needs funds ahead of time to qualify for grants. We have put in many volunteer hours and will continue to do so . Hiring a commercial chipper is expensive and we have depleted our funds doing projects. We could apply for a grant, but it requires $3,000 in matching funds up front to even apply.
Our ultimate goal is to access funding to continue fuel reduction and create fire breaks in our community. Paradise is a stark reminder to all communities to keep working on defensible space.
Our funding goal is $4,000 for chipping and matching grant requirements. Please help us if you can.
