Polz 17/18 SX Season

Donation protected
My name is Matthew Polz. I am raising money for my 2017-2018 ski cross season.

I have been developing sport related goals and dreams since around the age of 3. My career as an athlete started with 10 years of ski racing beginning at 5 years old. Around my 11th birthday I took on ski jumping/nordic combined as well, initially for the purpose of athlete related cross training. At 15 I qualified for the Alberta team for SJ/NC and had to make a choice between the two sports. I chose to stick around with SJ/NC for the next 5 years. I travelled the world, competed internationally within the International Ski Federation and became very close to qualifying for the national development team. August of 2016 I made a very tough decision to switch sports for personal reasons beginning my career as a ski cross athlete.

As a member of the Alberta Ski Cross team, I have been part of a very supportive group of teammates and coaches. I have excelled in the sport due to my 15 years worth of transferable skills in previous sports, and had a fairly successful 2017 season. I competed on the NorAm circuit achieving two bests of 11th place but unfortunately dropped down to 22nd in the North American cup standings due to injuries plaguing the end of my season.

This upcoming year is very crucial for the future of my athletic career and possibly academically as well. I am very close to qualifying for a spot on the National D Team for Canada in ski cross. It is also my last year as a junior and my final chance to achieve an opportunity to compete for Canada in the Word Junior Championships. I have been training hard over the off season building muscle and preparing my body to start the season off stronger than ever. Becoming a registered national team athlete in Canada has the possibility to give you over $10k for your season and $25k towards post-secondary education. This has been an investment for other future goals too. I'd like to become some kind of doctor or scientist someday and 25k would certainly help with that. My other life long dream has been to become an Olympian. This season would be a crucial step in deciding whether 2022 in Beijing may become a reality or stay a dream.

Anyway the point is, many people come to understand that being a high performance athlete in Canada can be very difficult financially. I work and train at the same time but it isn't enough to pay for everything all together as external expenses are involved. Although I get support from my immediate family, the total costs are unrealistic for them to bear. And that’s where you come in.

My goal is to raise $20,000. $100 would go a long way but any amount is appreciated. Please consider contributing as your help will give me the opportunity to achieve the next step in pursuing my dreams.

Thank you for your consideration.
