Update (17-Nov-2020): My dearest brother-in-law and precious friend James has left this world, leaving us all devastated for his loss. He leaves behind his amazing and patient wife Loida (Beng) Liva and many friends along the way. Here is James in a few words from his friends and family:

Beng (James' wife): "Babe, you fought the good fight, and the battle is over, no more pains and worries. I thank the Lord for giving you to me. Words are not enough how blessed I am to have you in my life. Thank you for everything, and I am going to miss you so much. I know that you are still going to comfort me at all times. Rest in peace baby, till we meet again. You are my guardian angel now. I love you always and forever."

Dahly: "During tough times you were there listening to my life stories, having big ears just listening with no judging. Offering shoulders to cry on. James, you spoiled us in so many ways. I miss your cooking almost every weekend. You and Aaron have the tandem on cooking barbecue and burgers. I miss those days that you're inviting me to have dinner in my own house. My family misses you so much. You have a big heart, a generous heart. I will never forget. I am very lucky that I got a chance to spend time with you on your last days. I had the opportunity to take good care of you in my little ways. My family loves you. You will remain in our hearts forever James."

Moe: "Rest in peace bro. Your suffering is over now, and you are in a better place. I've known you only for a short while, but you've become more than a brother to me, more than a friend. Your presence will be sorely missed, and your delicious burgers too..."

Lorie: "I will miss your loud laughter James, and your patience with us all when we acted with drama and zeal. You drove me anywhere I wanted to go, and showed me many places around Canada, and made breakfast for me, and complemented my cooking at all times... You will be missed. Please rest now. I know you are in a happy place right now."

Rocil: "There are no goodbyes. Wherever you'll be, you're always be remembered. Rest in peace my brother-in law."

Jhovie: "Thank you so much James for all the memories. You are not just a good friend but a brother to me. Thank you so much for everything, your every piece of advices since my day 1 here in Toronto, you are such a good friend and very good husband to your wife, look after Beng from up above.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My brother-in-law and dearest friend James had a severe stroke recently which also resulted in a rupture of a few of his heart arteries. He was severely bleeding that he needed to undergo a 7-hour open heart surgery in order to save his life. The surgeons had to take a segment of the arteries from both groins and calf in order to repair and reconnect the damaged arteries in his heart. The 7-hour battle in the operating room put his bodily systems in so much stress that the doctors needed to keep him sedated in the ICU because everytime he tries to wake up he goes into seizure. He is still not out of the woods yet as the doctors still need to do a series of laboratory tests and scans in order to rule out if the injury has affected his brain and other vital organs.

James is the epitome of a genuinely nice person. He is always fun and awesome to have around, with potent and loud laughter only matched by his will to survive against the odds, and he always goes out of his way to support not only his closest friends and family, but strangers and newcomers who need the occasional push every now and then as well. His colleagues at work see him as a family member, not just a coworker.

We want James' laughter and great spirit to continue to brighten our moments for years to come, and now we need your help to support him and his wife in this unexpected and tragic time they are passing through.

In his wife’s own words: "Those big cuts on your chest, cuts on your left and right groin and right calf used for grafting of your ruptured arteries, they all mean you are a fighter."

We all thank you in advance for your contributions and support.
