Want to support the arts and help bring more poetry to Tucson?

Read below to hear about who we are, where we come from, and why your help sharing poetry and art with our community matters.

WHO WE ARE

POG: Poetry in Action, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community arts organization. We've been presenting incredible poetry and related arts programs in Tucson for 22 years. What defines and distinguishes us is that we do not take for granted what poetry is and how it should look or sound. When it comes to the arts, we welcome diversity--in every sense of the word. We believe in radical aesthetic experimentation, and we believe in creating space to amplify marginalized and underrepresented voices.

POG has presented, in addition to poets: musicians, performance artists, puppeteers, visual artists, dancers, and groups/individuals who think about our contemporary moment through their artistic practices.

OUR BEGINNINGS

POG began in 1996, a project envisioned by Tenney Nathanson, Cynthia Miller, and Charles Alexander. From the beginning we have focused on bringing innovative poetry and poetics projects to Tucson, particularly projects not well represented by local poetry groups, or university or college programs. Each year since then, we have brought 10 or more visiting poets and artists to Tucson, often presenting them with local artists in readings, performances, workshops, and other projects.

WHY DONATE?

We believe poetry matters, and that we always need to re-envision what poetry is and does, how it responds and relates to the world at large. Walt Whitman said that “Reading is a gymnast’s act,” and this is also true of being in the world. Poetry is an act. We are here / we make language / we make poems.
