Update (February 7th, 2023):
I hope you're having a wonderful start to February.
Unfortunately, since we were not able to reach our funding goal of $30k by January 31st, we have asked GoFundMe (on February 6th) to issue refunds to our generous donors. We will keep you updated on the timing of that process on the Poets and Muses website.
If you still would like to support the Beyond Projections project, you can donate at: https://poetsandmuses.com/donate/.
My name is Imogen Arate. I am an Asian-American writer and the Founder of Poets and Muses, an award-winning BIPOC-focused weekly poetry podcast that has featured 149 poets from 18 countries (see a sampling of our featured poets below and many more on Instagram), with a listening audience from over 100 countries worldwide.
At the end of 2018, I launched Poets and Muses to address the under-representation of marginalized literary voices and show how people from all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds share their life stories through poetry.
During our three-year-plus journey, I found that because writers and artists from marginalized communities have less access to achieving economic viability for their creative works, in addition to providing a platform that features marginalized voices, we also need to directly help people make a living while doing what they love. This is why, after much soul-searching and research , we decided to launch Beyond Projections, a multimedia project that pays its featured writers and artists (up to 1,872 per year) for showcasing their artistic reactions to film.
Specifically, we're asking for $30k to
- launch a paying journal and
- profit-sharing anthologies;
- pay contributing poets, artists and editors;
- offer free submission opportunities; and
- launch a companion podcast series.
Please visit the Beyond Projection's FAQs section to read more about our plans for the project and funds raised. (If they've not been addressed already, you can ask your questions there.)
Please donate and share to launch Beyond Projections!
