I tried to make it as fun a read as possible :)
The Prelude - Call Me An Optimist:
When PMT was founded in 2001, it was with the intention of building a center where people, of all backgrounds and experience levels, could come together through their love of dance to build a community where they can better themselves as artists and people. Dance gave me the ability to find focus, purpose and self-improvement. My community of friends and family gave me strength and resolve. I wanted a place where people could have all of this while still getting the best dance industry had to offer. So, PMT House of Dance was born.
However, even in my 'younger days', I realized that it would take time and a unique plan to build this. Thus, PMT Dance Studio was employed as a foundation to achieve this goal. We needed more if we were going to build a house for dance.
The Plan - Foundation is the Key:
So, a plan was put forward to build a foundation that this house could be built. We needed to be different if we were going to be successful. After all, innovation is the birthplace of success. Rather than follow most traditional strategies, we took our time and played the long game. We developed talent from within, develop connections with local communities, cultivate professional relationships, build our professional standing while gaining insight about every part of the dance world. Over time, we were able to achieve national success as evidenced by our numerous television appearances, awards and press recognition. Now, we are a place major companies go to when they need talent. All the while, we maintained a deep connection to the beating heart of it all - NYC Dance Community - through Open Sessions, events, outreach, free and affordable opportunities coupled by personalized approach taken by our faculty with our students. 16 and 1/2 years later, that foundation is strong and there is nothing else like it in NYC.
The Next Phase - Movin' on Up:
Now, the time is right. Effective March 1st, PMT Dance Studio and all it's various parts which have formed and grown over the years - the school, the dance company, showcases, talent representation, kids programs, community outreach programs, commercial divisions - will come together and we will be known as PMT House of Dance!
A big part of this will be our NEW HOME on 25th and 6th Avenue. This new location will have 1500 sq feet more space, elevators (yes, I know), digital friendly, central air, larger and modern studios and even a new, Studio C. It will be the community center, the house of dance, dreamed of so many years ago.
The New Reality - We Need Your Support:
The world in 2018 is far different than it was in 2001. Our competitors for space in NYC now are Amazon, Google, IT companies and other massive corporations. Small businesses, at least as we knew them, are no longer part of this new reality. Now, businesses are asked to bid 6-7 digits (of money) just to be considered for a seat at the table. Nothing less is accepted.
So, we need your help. I need your help. In order to make this move, we need to raise the funds. Luckily, our studio has experienced enough growth and success to get a seat at that (very expensive) table and cover much of the cost - which is well above half a million dollars. That being said, over the next 1-2 weeks, we will need contributions totaling AT LEAST $150,000 to reach our goal and make it happen. I know that sounds like a lot, but I have overcome much larger obstacles through this journey. I'm very confident we can do this.
We'll Do It Our Way:
I could easily find a solution that would result in us being co-opted by a larger interest. That's not what PMT is. PMT is a community and a needed part of the NYC Arts community. The key word that - community. Groups can be easily divided, communities cannot. Businesses can be duplicated and manipulated, communities cannot. That's how we were able to survive while we watched much of the NYC dance scene dwindle away and become co-opted by the ever changing NYC landscape. That's why I'm so confident we will continue to flourish. What we have is authentic. It is grounded in substance. It is unique. It is a dance family.
