We are the Plymouth Hub for the COP 26 Coalition. We are drawing people together to protest the COP 26 climate talks taking place this year, to demand real action on global heating.
We are looking to organise protests locally, and if possible to bring a contingent up to Glasgow for 6th November. We need funds for all of this, especially to put on transport.
As was highlighted in the recent IPCC "Code Red for Humanity " report, current international agreements around climate change are not up to the job. The main item on the agenda of the COP 26 meeting in Glasgow this November is to finalise "implementation guidelines" for the existing -- inadequate -- agreement that has been reached at Paris in 2015.
The current goal is net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. This is too slow. We are expected to cross over the target warming of 1.5 degrees Celcius above pre-industrial temperatures (which has generally been thought of as a maximum "safe" global temperature) by 2030. We need immediate, real action -- not self-regulation of the corporations which have driven us to this point, and not pinning all our hopes on some technological breakthrough that may never come.
The wildfires that have ravaged Greece, Turkey, and even Siberia; the "once in a thousand years" coldsnap and the "once in a thousand years" heatwave that have cause havoc in the USA; the floods in China, Japan, and Germany -- events like these are only going to become more frequent and more intense. Every fraction of a degree of warming represents mass disruption, destruction, and death.
