OUR LIVE MUSIC SCENE IS IN TROUBLE - WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW
2020 has been unimaginable for all of us, with too many small businesses, restaurants, fellow Americans, friends and family members paying the ultimate price. The year has also devastated our local live music scene, shutting down our music venues, isolating our artists and suffocating the "human cultural collisions" that music storyteller Robert Gordon describes in his legendary book It Came From Memphis.

Midtown Crossing Grill & The Lounge at 3rd & Court: Closed. Bar DKDC: Now a deli. The P&H: Moving. The Hi-Tone: Endangered. Who's Next?

If we don't do something, and NOW, this list will grow each month, each week. A survey of venue owners by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) indicated that up to 90% of our independent music venues across the country won't last past 2021.

If you are new to this topic, you might be thinking "Didn't our small businesses, including our music venues, get relief from the CARES ACT, small business loans, Payroll Protections, etc.?" Many did, some did not, but most are still struggling. And, "Isn't Save Our Stage being passed soon?" Yes, however the aid from that act may not be enough for many of our local venues.

-- WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY TODAY GO?  To enable PLUGGED>IN and Partners to: further assist efforts for more relief aid for our venues and musicians; CONTRIBUTE to the Covid Relief Fund of Music Export Memphis; CREATE paid OPPORTUNITIES to the live music, arts and filmmaking communities --

Despite the good news of vaccines coming soon and Congress' efforts at extensions of economic relief, cash-strapped live music venues continue to face insurmountable challenges. And unfortunately for those that survive the next few months - even once venues are permitted to reopen - it will take months for the industry to return to usual schedules.

It's important to understand that live music revenue doesn't just support the venue owners, employees and musicians that make the music happen. It represents an entire music ecosystem. National economic estimates say that for every $1 spent at a live music event, another $12 is spent in the local economy on food and beverages sales, transportation, hotels, etc. And in a city like Memphis, live music is a primary draw for attracting a developing workforce, for generating millions of dollars in tourism and in contributing to the tax base. And it plays an obvious and critical role in our city's cultural economy. Memphis IS its music.

Save Our Stages and National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), MusiCares, Music Export Memphis and others are all engaging in momental efforts to support Memphis music and musicians, and we fully and actively support their efforts. With Plugged-In we need even more coordinated help to more broadly engage public awareness and direct support for our independent Memphis venues and our music makers.
