Pls help Sergio in this transition

On the night of October 19, 2017, my 23-year old cousin, Sergio, was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident. He was struck by a car head-on and ejected from his motorcycle. He was immediately transferred to Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a mild concussion, few bruised ribs, a fractured nose, bruised knees and ankles, and blood in his brain. Later that night, an MRI showed that Sergio also suffered from a spinal injury, which we feared the most. Sergio was immediately rushed into surgery for a spinal fusion in hopes to restore feeling to the bottom half of his body.

The surgery, unfortunately, revealed that Sergio had fractured 6 of his thoracic spine vertebrae - TH3 through TH9 – and had broken his TH4 and TH5 vertebrae. While the surgery was a success and the surgeon was able to align Sergio’s spine in hopes that it will slowly heal itself and allow Sergio to regain feeling, Sergio faces an uphill battle in adapting to his new way of life. With therapy and the advantage of being young, we hope Sergio’s spine will heal correctly – with time – but til then, Sergio will have no functionality of his lower half.

Days after his surgery, Sergio was transferred to rehabilitation. While we hoped rehabilitation would be to help him walk and move his lower half again, it is aimed at teaching Sergio how to go about his daily life with the limited use of his legs – how to adapt to life in a wheelchair. The spinal fusion surgery, doctors explained, would give Sergio the change to walk one day but til then, the rehabilitation and occupational and physical therapy, will help Sergio adapt to his life.

Sergio’s doctors estimate that it will take another 18 months for the bruising to go down in Sergio’s spine so they can better determine how bad his spinal injuries were. In the meantime, Sergio will be adapting to a new lifestyle.

Life is always changing; nothing ever stays the same. It can change in the blink of an eye. Sergio’s life did just that. His life changed overnight and now he must adapt to a new way of life. Sergio was in a motorcycle accident and injured his spinal cord but by the grace of God, he is alive. We are firm believers that God has better plans for him and a wheelchair will not stop him from reaching his goals. Sergio is a selfless, amazing person who has touched not only our hearts, but the hearts of many, both known and unknown. Please join us in helping him transition from the hospital to his home. His new lifestyle requires that we make his home wheelchair-friendly to ensure his safety and comfort. Additionally, he will need ongoing treatment and physical therapy, which he cannot afford on his own. As life would have it, Sergio was in the midst of transitioning between jobs so he is without health insurance. Together, we can help him reach his goal to have the necessities of functioning on a day to day basis, as we all require.

Please help with a donation - no amount is too small or too big. Your gracious contributions are welcomed with open arms and will help get Sergio on track to a new life. God bless you for your generosity.
