Tim's Story

Tim Rinehart is the proud husband of Amber Rinehart and loving father of 2 children, Kayleigh (8) and Mason (3). Tim and Amber are both 35 years old and have been married for 11 years.  The couple met in High School in Lewis County, West Virginia.

Tim was first diagnosed in 2014 with an astrocytoma grade 3 brain tumor, and had his first brain surgery on Mason’s first birthday. During the first surgery, Doctors were only able to remove 80% of the tumor. For the next 7 weeks he was traveling daily for therapies. These therapies included radiation, chemotherapy and all in the most radical forms available to the Rinehart family in order to stop the growth of his tumor. Tim had to learn how to walk and talk again. Speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy became a must for Tim.  With the help of radiation & chemotherapy they were able to stop the growth of the tumor for 26 months. During a regularly scheduled appointment, Tim and Amber received the message they had absolutely dreaded to hear, “the tumor is growing again”.

Ruby Memorial Hospital recommended the 2nd surgery and in a hurry.  The surgeons were able to remove 95% of the new growth during this surgery and were very pleased. Tim has already received the maximum amount of Radiation to the brain that he can receive. Currently, radiologists are reading the latest MRI and are hopeful to pinpoint some minor amounts of radiation to take out the rest of the new growth.  They cannot remove any part of the old tumor because it is in the communication part of the brain, and some of it is located in the white matter of the brain. They have sent a biopsy of the new growth to the lab and they are awaiting results.

The only treatment that Ruby Memorial Hospital is offering is surgery and chemo, and he cannot continue to have brain surgery. The family is currently working on getting Tim into an out-of-state facility that hopefully can offer more options. The facilities they are looking at specialize in brain tumors and do offer some clinical trials.
