Please Help Liberty Walk Again

Donation protected

Hello, my name is Shelby, and I’m here for my one-year-old Great Dane, Liberty.

Liberty went to the emergency vet on 12/1/20 for vomiting related to an ongoing mild GI issue. She came out having an unidentifiable allergic reaction and completely unable to stand or walk.

We admitted her to the vet, expecting to treat her vomiting and officially diagnose her chronic GI issue. We thought that to be the end of her troubles because we had a diet treatment plan in place.  But on 12/2/20 when we arrived to pick her up, the vet said they just noticed she was having an allergic reaction and her face was completely swollen, but they weren’t sure why. She stayed another night, and was allowed to come home on the afternoon of 12/3/20. Within hours of coming home, Liberty was yelping and limping. The next morning, 12/4/20, she couldn’t walk or stand at all.

We rushed her to the UPenn emergency vet and they said they suspect a neck/spinal cord injury, but would require an MRI to diagnose. Liberty’s symptoms are usually seen in senior dogs or dogs that have been hit by a car or shot, so everyone is baffled.

We opted to bring her home with us on pain meds and strict crate rest, and we’re doing our best to keep her comfortable.  The medical bills mounted up SO fast, and we are actively working to save for an MRI and possible surgery, and any other treatment/test she’ll need as fast as possible.

We are devastated, confused, and feeling overwhelmed. We can’t even believe this is happening. She just turned one on 11/27/20, and one week later, Liberty has no use of her front legs, minimal use of her back legs, and no ability to stand or walk on her own.  I could never have imagined this happening to her at all, let alone so young. Our 2 y/o daughter doesn’t understand why Liberty can’t play with her anymore, and it’s heartbreaking.

I know 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, so even if you can’t help, please send positive thoughts and hope for Liberty! Thank you!
