Two important aspects of my life are running and volunteering for Ukrainian Catholic University. Better yet is to combine the two to create something special - a charity cause powered by running! I have experienced the thrills of running marathons in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. Now, after a few years of a good and much-needed break, I will run the Chicago marathon on October 7, a month prior to our 15th annual New York City luncheon to benefit Ukrainian Catholic University, of which I am the co-chair.
A few years ago I visited the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv and saw the incredible growth and development of new campuses and programs for students who come not only from Ukraine, but from all over the world. I am dedicating my race to help raise funds for UCU, in particular to purchase essential equipment for UCU students, war veterans, as well as future military chaplains and officers of Ukraine’s Ground Forces who train and undergo rehabilitation in the UCU sports complex. The complex is in urgent need of two training machines – a Concept 2 Rower and an Assault Airbike – together valued at more than $2,000.
For those unfamiliar with UCU, the university has been called "the jewel of higher education in Ukraine" by journalist Edward Lucas of The Economist. The university and its affiliate, the Lviv Business School, have been working to educate a new generation of young, visionary, ethical leaders that can help Ukraine overcome the legacy of Soviet Communism and build a civil society and an economy based on human dignity, democratic values, entrepreneurial spirit, and moral vision. UCU is the only Catholic university between Poland and Japan, funded almost exclusively by non-government donors such as you. Your support helps build and shape Ukraine's bright future.
I will be very grateful if my friends and family would help me in this special initiative. On October 7, I will join 20 members of Ukrainian Running Club New York, as well as thousands of other runners as we run 26.2 miles through streets of Chicago. If you would like to support me, please make a pledge to contribute one dollar for each mile ($26) or kilometer ($42) that I will run, or any amount you wish. No amount is too small.
Thank you so very much for considering this special request. My race will be that much more satisfying if I know my friends stand behind me in supporting this wonderful cause!
