<div>We have created this funding request on behalf of Karen Wilson, our dear friend and neighbor here on Whidbey Island. Karen was recently diagnosed with a rare type of highly aggressive cancer in her breast and underwent a modified-radical mastectomy on October 15th to have a very large area of cancer removed along with six lymph nodes. After two weeks of patiently awaiting the results of the pathology report, Karen received the most WONDERFUL news that the cancer was excised with clear margins and that it had not spread to the lymph!!!  Recovery takes considerable time, of course, and she is resting comfortably at home, gradually increasing her activity level. Many beautiful friends have assisted in fresh juicing and preparing healthy meals for Karen, and she's feeling stronger and lighter every day as she recuperates. She’s been out for walks most days, as well as doing gentle exercises to promote healing. She will soon be starting immunotherapy treatments to work with cancer stem cells and prevent recurrence as well as physical therapy to regain her mobility and strength. Starting in February, she will begin the year-long process to reconstruct the area with autologous tissue, which requires one very long, complex surgery and two shorter outpatient surgeries. Karen has been so optimistic and positive throughout all of this.... such an inspiration to us all! The health insurance that Karen and her wonderfully supportive husband Wade have, while gratefully covering 80 percent of the expenses after an annual $5500 deductible, does not cover the remaining 20 percent. With the skyrocketing healthcare costs we have seen over the past years, it should come as no surprise that their portion of the medical costs, plus the upcoming reconstructive surgeries in a new deductible year, and the out-of pocket expenses for integrative oncology, physical therapy, lab work and other treatments, are going to be extremely high, estimated to be at least $81,000.  With their permission, we have created this page as a place where people can contribute any amount, large or small, toward paying down these expenses. Karen is fortunate to have so many beautiful friends and family members, as well as loyal customers with her Sweet Sisters Bodycare business, and we believe that many of you would love to make a donation toward her ultimate recovery from this unexpected health challenge.
