Please Consider Helping Pepper

My senior cat Pepper was diagnosed with megacolon in August of 2024, and for the past year, he has gone without incident.

Last weekend, I noticed the familiar symptoms of constipation, and after close monitoring over the weekend, I brought him to the vet first thing Monday morning. With x-rays, it was determined that once again, Pepper had a blockage. Once again, he was so blocked that he could not defecate on his own. My sweet boy was so patient through x-rays and enemas, and ultimately it was decided to put him under anesthesia and try to manually remove the blockage.

While much of the blockage has been removed successfully, x-rays have shown large pieces that have barely progressed through his intestines. At his age, this has been rather rough on his body between the physical aspect and the effects of anesthesia. He spent Monday and Tuesday with his vet, and back again on Thursday.

While it has certainly been worth every effort to try, these efforts have come at a cost. I have dedicated my life to my animals, and I work very hard to provide them with everything they need. But every pet owner can understand that some things can still happen when you are least prepared. Any contribution to this cause would mean the absolute world to me. I already would like to extend a thanks to everyone who has reached out in support during this time.

I would also like to take a moment to tell you Pepper's story. He was born at a horse farm in Manitowoc County. I brought Pepper and his sister Salt home as kittens. I had actually believed they were both girls until I brought them to the vet to be spayed. Only then did I find out I had a beautiful brother and sister pair. I guess I just hadn't thought to check.

After a couple of years, and a long story in between, I moved and my cats stayed at the barn they knew, with a person who loved them.

For 10 years, Pepper lived as a barn cat with his siblings. (Yes, siblings, as I brought home his brothers Jack and Danny the next year.) Over those years, I asked to have the cats, but I was never given them back. Over the years, I thought of them often, never knowing if I'd ever see them again.

And for three of those cats, Salt, Jack, and Danny, I would never see them again.

Until last year. The farm was going to be sold and Pepper was the only one left. He was old, he was skinny, and he had fleas. But I thought I could fix him. I thought I could give us more time, to make up for the time I lost with his family. And I did.

We spent many happy months together before his megacolon diagnosis last year. And many happy months since.

But you see, while I had him since he was a kitten, there were so many years of his life where I couldn't be there.

So here I am, finally able to love my cat in his senior years, only to face crisis once again. He had managed so well this past year. We developed a daily routine of giving him his meds with a tasty snack. Pepper is the nicest cat I've met in my whole life. The most trouble he's given anyone at the vet is when he purrs too loudly to hear his own heartbeat or listen to his lungs.

I'm writing this on Thursday night. He once again spent the day with his vet, more x-rays, another enema, a change in meds, and we are hoping for a miracle. I'm physically, emotionally, and financially drained. My poor Pepper has been through the wringer and his future is still uncertain. Unless you have a cat with megacolon, I don't know who else can understand the feeling of scooping through a litterbox praying to see poop. But that's our current reality.

I am hoping to raise $2500 towards Pepper's care. His vet bills have already surpassed $1000, and no matter the outcome, this number will continue to climb. I am grateful for every dollar, every kind word, and every person who carries Pepper in their hearts during this time. I have been an animal lover my entire life, and I am committed to giving my pets the best life possible. But as any animal lover knows, they don't take turns, they don't wait for you to be ready, and sometimes turning to our community of fellow animal lovers is the only chance we have.
