Rachel and Sam welcomed their sweet boy, Eli Joseph Zanmiller, on March 26th, weighing 7lb 15oz and 21in long. He is absolutely perfect and couldn't be more loved.
His arrival into the world didn't come without it's hurdles. Rachel was seen by her OB the morning of March 25th for her weekly check up when she reported worsening headaches and a new rash on her legs. Her OB thought it be best she be admitted at United Hospitals Mother Baby Center and be worked up for possible HELLP syndrome. Initially lab work was concerning for HELLP syndrome, so Rachel was admitted and began induction for delivery of their baby boy. Further lab tests revealed her white count was in the high 70s, her platelets were in the 50s and hemoglobin was in the 8 range.
Due to these abnormal labs, a peripheral blood smear was done which revealed a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This was later confirmed by a bone marrow biopsy after the birth of sweet Eli. It was a shock, but Rachel and Sam were both beyond thankful to have given birth to another beautiful, healthy boy.
Later Friday evening Rachel was transported to the U of M to begin at least a month long stay where she will receive aggressive chemotherapy. It is going to be a long road ahead, but Rachel knows that she will beat cancer and soon will be able to return home in the arms of her boys and husband.
Funds raised will help with both Rachel's medical expenses, as well as living expenses. Rachel will be out for at least 6 months and Sam will be taking time away from work as well. Any amount helps. Thank you all so much <3
Organized by Rachel's siblings Ashley Welch, Kody Kohuth, Laura Albrecht, Travis Metzen, and Nick Metzen and Sam's sister Mary Bohn
