Hi, I am the father of Timothy Kim.
My son is a 7-year-old first grader. He has recently been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Muscle weakness can begin as early as age 3, first affecting the muscles of the hips, pelvic area, thighs and shoulders, and later the skeletal (voluntary) muscles in the arms, legs and trunk. The calves often are enlarged. By the early teens, the heart and respiratory muscles also are affected. The life expectancy is between the ages of 20 to 25. Timothy's current condition is that his ankles have become very weak, which causes him to fall when he walks. He is currently attending physical therapy to help with his muscles and also teaching him how to live with this disease. For example, how to use a wheelchair. He might eventually have to go to occupational therapy as well.
About a week before my son was diagnosed, my wife was hospitalized due to a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM). A brain AVM is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. The arteries are responsible for taking oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. Veins carry the oxygen-depleted blood back to the lungs and heart. A brain AVM disrupts this vital process. This is rare and affects less than 1 percent of the population. Thankfully, the surgery was a success but there was damage to her brain. She cannot read, drive, or do basic daily functioning. She is attending physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
Due to being a full-time caretaker for both my wife and my son, I am unable to hold a full-time employment; hence starting this campaign. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my story. Any contributions, prayers, financials, or both, would be greatly appreciated.

근육의 약화증상은 빠르면 3세쯤 부터 시작되며, 제일 먼저 영향을 받는 부분은 둔근과 골반 부근, 허벅지 그리고 어깨 부분이며 나중에는 팔과 다리 그리고몸통의 골격근(수의근)에 영향을 미치게 됩니다. 종아리는 오히려 비대해지고, 십대에 이르면 심장과 호흡 관련 근육들에까지 영향을 미치게 됩니다. 예상되는 수명은 20 ~ 25세 사이이며, 티모시는 현재 발목이 매우 약해져 걸을 때 종종 넘어지곤 합니다. 현재는 물리치료를 통해 근육들을 치료하고 있고 더불어 자신의 질병과 함께 살아가는 방법을 배우고 있습니다. 예를들어, 휠체어를 사용하는 방법같은 것 말입니다. 하지만 결국에는 작업요법도 받아야 할 것입니다.
제 아들이 그러한 진단을 받기 일주일 전에 제 아내는 [뇌동정맥기형(腦動靜脈畸形, brain arteriovenous malformation, AVM)]으로 병원에 있었습니다. AVM은 비정상적인 혈관들이 엉켜 동맥과 정맥이 모세혈관과 연결되지 못하는 결함입니다. 아시다시피 동맥은 산소가 충분한 혈액을 심장에서 뇌로 운반하는역할을 맡고 있고, 정맥은 산소가 소모된 혈액을 폐와 심장으로 돌려보내는 역할을 합니다. AVM은 이 생명활동을 방해합니다. 이 질환은 매우 희귀하고 1%의 미만의 사람만이 이 질환을 가지고 있습니다. 감사하게도, 수술은 성공적이었지만 아내의 뇌에는 손상이 남았습니다. 아내는 이제 책을 읽거나, 운전같은 일상적인생활을 하지 못합니다. 지금은 물리치료와 작업치료 그리고 언어치료를 받고 있습니다.
아내와 아들을 24시간 돌봐야하기 때문에, 저는 풀타임 직장을 유지 할 수가 없었습니다. 그래서 이 캠페인을 시작 했습니다. 우선 제 이야기에 귀를 기울여주신 여러분께 감사드리고 싶습니다. 여러분이 보내주시는 어떤 도움도 감사하게 받겠습니다.
