Please help our blind girls see again

This month, five neglected Silkies joined our rescue after being surrendered to the RSPCA. They were not coping in a shelter environment and require either behavioural and/or health conditions that need to be addressed before rehoming.

We call them The Fab 5 because they are the most beautiful puppers you could ever meet and their future will be fabulous.

Two of the youngest girls are completely blind with cataracts. Our girls have been used for intensive breeding purposes. Neglected. Emaciated. Un-socialised and scared of the world.

After much deliberation and consultation with vets and vet specialists, we are all in agreement that both beautiful girls are good candidates for cataract removal surgery with 90% chance of the surgery being successful.

At the young age of Bella (5yrs old) and Lucille, (2yrs old) their eyesight can be restored. Giving them a whole new world.

Here comes the tricky part. The surgery for both girls is estimated between $5,500 to $6,000 for each girl for both eyes.  Taking the total to $12 000

We were aware of Lucille requiring cataract surgery prior to taking her in and had budgeted for her.

But we were unaware of Ella having sight issues until she arrived at her carer's house. It became obvious very early on that Ella is also blind and has since been diagnosed by our vet as having mature cataracts as well.

At their young age, the risks of not having removal surgery leaves them highly susceptible to complications such as glaucoma or retinal displacement that will cause pain and the only option would be eye removal.

We are a small rescue organisation who receives no government funding and we rely completely on kind donations from the public.

Finding Ella requires the same surgery as Lucille (essentially doubling our costs) we now find we are needing to ask for help to give these girls the future they deserve.

The ultimate conclusion is; the girls being young, in good health and now on the path to a brighter future, giving them the gift of eyesight is something we are committed to.

All the while, being aware our other rescue dogs need funds to cover their needs as well. Including our Forever Care program of palliative and special needs dogs.

Any donation, no matter how small, we would be eternally grateful for. And your donation will give our beautiful girls a new life and give them the gift of sight which they deserve.

The reason believed to be why Lucille and Bella have cataracts at such a young age is faulty genetics, whilst not common, it does occur. Our girls have been used for intensive breeding purposes (their pups would either be carriers of the gene or become blind early in life too).

The other 3 puppers of the Fab 5 have had their costs covered including Genie who had mammary tumours, an enlarged heart, required desexing, dental, comprehensive blood panel. Dillion and Pixie have behavioural issues that we are working on but do not have any known ailments, they need behavioural assistance and slow introduction to everything the outside world has to offer.
