Send Rachel To SongFest

I have been given a wonderful opportunity to attend SongFest, a young artist program for singers and pianists which focuses on art song. I believe that it is my mission and responsibility to use the sacred art of music, particularly oratorio and art song, to serve and teach, and I am so happy to be able to attend this program so that I can learn how to better do this!
Not only will SongFest help me to hone my vocal technique and musicianship by allowing me to wolk with a great selection of coaches and performers, but it will also help to further advance my career as a performer through networking and performance opportunities. The only things standing in my way are the tuition and housing fees. Any support you can give me, financial or otherwise, in this next step in my quest to follow my passion is so greatly appreciated. You can find out more information about Songfest at www.songfest.us/. Thank you so much!!!

I should probably include a bit more about me. I have a BM from CSU Stanislaus in vocal performance and composition and MM degrees from Peabody Conservatory in voice performance and music theory pedagogy. I am blind and have a Seeing Eye dog, a little black lab named Demi. I have had to overcome many challenges, and even outright discrimination, to make it this far in my career.

Deciding on a definite career path has been really difficult for me because I am passionate about so many things. In graduate school, I had wanted to focus more on music theory, thinking that I would like to teach it at the college level. Not long before I graduated, however, I had an experience which made me decide that I needed to take some time to really discover my calling. I started teaching music, performing occasionally, but really trying to understand the point and the meaning of music and how I could best use it to serve. I researched and thought about many different careers, but I always came back to performing.

Honestly, the idea of moving forward with a career in performance was scary to me. I was afraid of rejection, among other things, so I continued to rationalize about why it wasn’t a good idea. I have finally realized, though, that I have been allowing myself to be controlled by my fear—and I am done letting fear run my life!

I don’t know if performing will be my entire career, but I do know that I need to make it a bigger part of my life. It is my calling!
