Please Help Heal Our Kitties

Mr. Marmalade and his shy seal point brother Yeti were born around 2003.  My daughter Kellie and I adopted them from a local colony which we helped TNR.  These two sweet teenagers were ferals and fully adapted to outdoor life, so after an unsuccessful attempt to keep them indoors, they became our 'barn cats.'   For almost 15 years Mr. Marmalade and Yeti have lived safely with us, giving us joy with their beauty and antics, and over  that time they have become our very dear friends.

On May 14, 2018,  we heard the sound of a barking dog and our little companions inexplicably disappeared!  We spent three days searching for them, but in the end Mr. Marmalade rescued himself, appearing at our door seeking our help.  He was almost dead.  His tail had nearly been chewed off, his right front leg was broken, and his feet were covered with bites.  We rushed him to the vet , but he was not expected to survive.

The vet offered euthanasia, but we knew that Mr. Marmalade wanted to live and had sought our help to do so.  We told the doctors to do what they could for him in the hopes he would rally.  His condition remained critical for several days, but by the 22nd of May he was strong enough to have his infected tail removed.  By May 23 he was home and  sheltered on a screened porch where he now seems happy to remain.  He is receiving round-the-clock care and so far is doing as well as can be expected after such  trauma.

Meanwhile, Mr. Marmalade's shy brother, Yeti, reappeared with similar injuries.  We succeeded in capturing him with a Havahart trap on May 21 and took him to the vet immediately.  He went into surgery along with his brother, and had to have his broken hind foot sewn up and his beautiful tail removed as well.  He returned home with Mr. Marmalade and will remain permanently in the same enclosure.  He is doing well, hopping about on three legs, and we have made several 'hidey-holes' for him which he seems to enjoy.

The jury is still out on what attacked them, but at this point we strongly suspect it was a loose dog.

It's been a very traumatic time for everyone concerned, but especially for these poor cats.  The veterinary bills so far have totaled to $4377.98, and there could be more in the future.  I am 91 years old and on a fixed income, and while my daughter is donating what she can, she does not have a high-paying job.   Donations large or small will go directly on the vet bill, and would be so very deeply appreciated!
